Lorcan Tucker Excited About Ireland’s ODI Cricket Journey Towards World Cup 2027

Irish cricketer Lorcan Tucker discusses Ireland’s ODI prospects, facing England, and his exciting CPL experience.

Lorcan Tucker, the wicket-keeper batter from Ireland, is feeling enthusiastic about the future of Irish One Day International (ODI) cricket. He believes it’s an exciting time for the team as they embark on a new journey aiming to qualify for the 2027 Men’s World Cup. Tucker, hailing from Dublin and at the age of 27, is gearing up for his 45th ODI appearance when Ireland takes on England in their upcoming match.

“We’re currently playing some impressive cricket, filled with confidence, and it’s fantastic to play at new venues with dry conditions. With our squad at full strength, we have all the pieces needed for strong performances,” Tucker remarked.

As the team enters a fresh four-year cycle in preparation for the next World Cup, Tucker expresses optimism. He believes this period will be exhilarating as they explore new strategies and avenues in their ODI cricket journey.

Tucker rose to prominence by scoring an impressive 71 not out off 48 balls, nearly leading Ireland to victory against Australia in last year’s Men’s T20 World Cup. He also achieved a milestone earlier this year by scoring his maiden Test century against Bangladesh.

Regarding their upcoming match against England, Tucker commented, “We didn’t focus too much on their squad as they consistently field strong teams. The depth and talent in English cricket right now are remarkable – they are all formidable players and playing outstanding cricket.”

“We have some familiarity with a few of their players, but there are also new faces we haven’t encountered. It might take some adjustment for our team, but we’re eager to get out there and play some cricket,” he added.

Tucker has just returned from representing the St Kitts franchise in the Caribbean Premier League, filling in for Tim David. Reflecting on his CPL experience, he stated, “It was a fresh and exciting adventure. Interacting with experienced individuals and cricketers provided valuable insights and perspectives, particularly on self-improvement and the growth of one’s game over the coming years.”

He continued, “Franchise cricket is highly thrilling, and it will be intriguing to observe how it balances with international cricket in the coming years. There are numerous opportunities available for players like me and our team members, providing a higher level of exposure that wasn’t as accessible before.”

When asked about Ireland not qualifying for the upcoming World Cup in India, Tucker acknowledged their subpar performance in the qualifiers in Zimbabwe in June-July. “To be honest, it feels like everyone else is preparing for a party we weren’t invited to, which is tough. But that’s the way it goes. Our performance in Zimbabwe wasn’t up to the mark, and we have to accept that.”

Tucker concluded by emphasizing the uniqueness of ODI cricket, saying, “What makes ODI cricket special is that there’s only one World Cup every four years. T20 cricket comes around more frequently with a World Cup every two years, and it’s faster-paced. ODI cricket offers a different, more deliberate perspective on the game, which is why it holds a special place.”
