Virat Kohli is one of the most decorated cricketers of India with numerous records to his name. He has declared retirement from two formats after a decade of a successful career in them. After the T20 World Cup 2024 victory at Barbados against South Africa, he declared retirement along with his old teammate Rohit Sharma, and following their retirement, Ravindra Jadeja also decided to say goodbye to this format.

Now, after Rohit declared Test retirement in May, Kohli also decided to finally retire from his favorite format on May 12, 2025, before the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy.

List Of Double Centuries By Virat Kohli

1. 200 against West Indies (July 2016)

Virat Kohli had his first Test double century, a 283-ball 200 runs with 24 fours but without any sixes. This record innings was played at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua, the match beginning on July 21, 2016. This was not just his Test career first double hundred, but also a milestone as the first double century an Indian skipper had hit outside India.

India won the match convincingly by an innings and 92 runs, which was largely established by this monumental performance. Kohli scored 168 runs for the fifth-wicket stand with Ravichandran Ashwin, who also made a century.

The innings was a major milestone in Kohli’s Test career, showcasing his developing capacity to convert his centuries into much bigger, match-winning totals, particularly when he also took the burden of captaincy. It established an aggressive template for India’s away Tests under his captaincy.

2. 211 against New Zealand (October 2016)

Only a few months after his first double ton, Kohli continued the masterclass act by scoring 211 runs from 366 balls, including 20 boundaries. This was played at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore, between October 8-11, 2016. Interestingly, this was the first Test match to be played at this stadium, and Kohli made it one to remember with his batting.

This innings earned him the distinction of becoming the first Indian captain to register two double tons in Tests, confirming his swift rise as a dominant force. India won by a comprehensive margin of 321 runs. The highlight of this innings was the record fourth-wicket partnership of 365 runs with his deputy, Ajinkya Rahane (who scored 188).

This still stands as the record for the highest fourth-wicket partnership in Test cricket for India. This innings further entrenched his reputation as a Test batsman with the ability to play marathon innings, highlighting his skills of building humongous partnerships and dictating the pace of the game, much like batting out the opposition in the match.

3. 235 vs England (December 2016)

 

King Kohli carved out 235 from 340 balls, with 25 fours and 1 six. This match was played at the historic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in December 2016. This was his third double century of the year, a new record for an Indian skipper in a calendar year.

He showed remarkable resilience, batting almost nine hours to hold India’s imposing total of 631 together on a difficult turning pitch. India won by a big margin in an innings win. A marathon 241-run partnership with Jayant Yadav (104) was instrumental in creating India’s runaway score.

This was a masterclass of staying long and being skillful against a world-class English bowling line-up, and this proved his capability to play in different conditions and transform starts into match-winning scores that broke the will of the opposition.

4. 204 against Bangladesh (February 2017)

Kohli made 204 off 246 balls with 24 fours to his name. This double century came at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad, and the game began on February 9, 2017.

This record knock also made him the first batsman in the history of Test cricket to register double hundreds in four successive Test series, a rare world record which eclipsed the records of greats such as Don Bradman and Rahul Dravid. India defeated Sri Lanka by 208 runs.

In addition, India became the first side to register three consecutive 600-plus scores in Tests in this match. He put up a huge 222-run stand with Ajinkya Rahane. This innings summed up his amazing consistency and the purple patch he was on in the 2016-2017 home season, where he scored more than 1000 runs in Test cricket. Kohli played 213 runs off 267 deliveries with 15 fours and 2 sixes. This double century was achieved at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Nagpur, in November 2017. This was his fifth Test double century as captain, equaling Brian Lara’s then-record for most double centuries by a Test captain.

India won by an innings and 239 runs in a comprehensive victory. He went on to have a dominant 183-run partnership with Cheteshwar Pujara, who also went on to score a century.

6. 243 vs Sri Lanka (December 2017)

Kohli went on to top-score at home with 243 runs from 287 deliveries, including 25 fours. This match was played at the Feroz Shah Kotla Ground (currently Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium) in Delhi in December 2017. This is his highest score against this venue. This was his sixth double century, a feat which made him the first Test captain to achieve six Test double hundreds, thus breaking Brian Lara’s five.

He also joined Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag with the most double hundreds as an Indian batsman. The match was significantly played in extremely poor air quality in Delhi, which resulted in numerous interruptions to play and distress for both sets of players. India won by an innings. He scored 135 runs for the fifth wicket in company with Rohit Sharma and also had a huge partnership with Murali Vijay.

7. 254* vs South Africa (October 2019)

Virat Kohli hit his highest Test score, an unbeaten 254 runs from 336 balls, which included 33 fours and 2 sixes. This record-breaking innings came at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune, in October 2019. This is not only his individual highest Test score but also the highest by an Indian captain, overtaking MS Dhoni’s 224.

It was his seventh Test double hundred, making him the Indian record holder. He also surpassed Don Bradman’s record for most 150-plus scores as a captain. India won in a commanding fashion by an innings and 137 runs. Kohli was part of key partnerships, including a 178-run partnership with Ajinkya Rahane and a 225-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja.
