From 2020, teams representing five Sri Lankan cities will compete in the Lanka Premier League, a professional Twenty20 cricket tournament in Sri Lanka. In 2018, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) established the league. The tournament’s director was officially named Ravin Wickramaratne, the vice president of SLC, in August 2020. Samantha Dodanwala was formally appointed the director of the LPL competition in May 2022.
History
The inaugural season was initially scheduled to run from 18 August to 10 September 2018, however, it was repeatedly rescheduled owing to administrative problems at SLC. With 70 foreign players expressing interest in joining the league, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) stated the competition would begin on August 28, 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic in June 2020. Due to pandemic-related limitations, the first season finally debuted on November 26, 2020, after being delayed numerous times.
LPL Winners List
Only two seasons of the Lanka Premier League have been played so far. The league only began in 2020. The Jaffna Franchise won the championship both times, which is significant to note. Jaffna Stallions triumphed in 2020, while Jaffna Kings triumphed in 2021. The thrilling element is that they triumphed over the Galle Gladiators in both finals.
