Kumar Kushagra found himself amidst the anticipation and nerves of the IPL 2024 auction, eagerly awaiting his fate among 333 players listed for selection. While attending a Ranji Trophy camp in Ranchi, Kushagra closely followed the proceedings, hopeful for a breakthrough.
As the auction unfolded, the tension mounted for the 19-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman. His name eventually appeared on the auction list, setting the stage for a life-altering moment. Witnessing the bidding war between franchises, Kumar Kushagra experienced a rollercoaster of emotions.
Recalling the exhilarating turn of events, Kushagra reminisced, “Chennai Super Kings raised their paddle and soon the amount raced to INR 65 lakhs… Suddenly, the bid amount had risen to 7.2 crore.” Delhi Capitals emerged victorious, securing Kushagra for a staggering sum, marking a significant milestone in his career.

The monumental signing left Kushagra in awe as the realization sunk in. Surrounded by teammates and well-wishers, his joy knew no bounds. “When I saw that amount, I felt surprised… Suddenly, everyone came inside the room – Ranji Trophy players, support staff, as well as players and support staff of the U-23 team,” he shared.
For Kushagra, the journey to cricketing stardom began at home under the guidance of his father, Shashikant, who, despite not playing cricket professionally, devotedly coached his son. Early mornings were dedicated to rigorous practice sessions before school, laying the foundation for Kushagra’s unwavering dedication.

Kushagra’s transition from age-group cricket to the senior level showcased his resilience and adaptability. He reflected on the pivotal shift in his approach, “By reducing match time… and increasing the practice, I took a lot of learnings about myself and my game.”
