India’s left-arm wrist-spinner, Kuldeep Yadav, marked his 29th birthday with an extraordinary performance, securing a career-best figure of 5-17 in the third T20I against South Africa. The victory, with India winning by a substantial 106 runs, leveled the series at 1-1. Kuldeep expressed his delight in contributing to the team’s success, emphasizing the importance of a special day for him.
In the post-match press conference, Kuldeep shared his thoughts, saying, “It was a special day. Never thought that I would pick five wickets (in this match). I just wanted the team to win the match, and I am happy to contribute, which is more important.”
Acknowledging initial concerns about his rhythm due to a break from bowling, Kuldeep highlighted the perfect conditions for spinners at the Wanderers. Having played six ODIs and two T20Is in South Africa, he noted the spin-friendly nature of the wickets, especially the quick movement of the ball after pitching.

Reflecting on his strategy, Kuldeep mentioned, “I knew, if I bowl quicker through the air, they won’t have the chance to pull me over mid-wicket.” He shared insights into the varying conditions in different South African venues, adapting his approach accordingly.
Opening up about the difficulty of overcoming the Men’s ODI World Cup final loss to Australia on November 19, Kuldeep admitted, “Starting first seven to ten days were really difficult. Whenever I was waking up, the thought of losing the World Cup final was haunting me.” However, he emphasized the resilience needed in cricket, learning from setbacks and implementing those lessons in future matches.
Kuldeep Yadav’s birthday brilliance not only illuminated the cricket field but also added a memorable chapter to India’s T20I journey in South Africa.
