Karun Nair, who had made history with his triple century in Test cricket, has done it again. The 33-year-old batsman has now created a new world record in List-A cricket by becoming the player to score the most runs without being dismissed. This remarkable achievement came during a match in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where Nair’s superb batting performance led Vidarbha to a dominant victory over Uttar Pradesh.

On Friday, Karun Nair set a new record by surpassing the previous best for the most runs scored in List-A cricket without being dismissed. Nair achieved this feat by accumulating a total of 542 runs, overtaking the record held by former New Zealand all-rounder James Franklin, who had made 527 runs in 2010.

Karun Nair produced an innings of 112 runs, which led to him getting dismissed. His total of 542 runs is the first single player to do such a thing as achieving the highest score in a single innings. Other players like Joshua van Heerden with 512 runs, Fakhar Zaman with 455 runs, and Taufiq Umar with 422 runs are also on the list. Nair’s record remains unchallenged.

Karun Nair’s record-breaking performance was part of a team effort that saw Vidarbha comfortably defeat Uttar Pradesh by eight wickets. Uttar Pradesh had set a target of 308 runs, posting a total of 307 for 8 in their allotted 50 overs. However, Vidarbha chased down the target with ease, reaching 313 for 2 in just 47.2 overs.

The maiden hundred partnership for Nair went a long way in the chase, as he and Yash Rathod combined to put on 228 runs for the second wicket. Rathod was almost unplayable, hitting 138 off 140 balls without losing his wicket to guide Vidarbha to a comprehensive win. The win saw Vidarbha take the top position in Group D, taking 20 points from five matches. Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh took positions at two and three respectively with 14 points in the bank.

It is intriguing when the career of Karun Nair has been during his 33 years. Though he has created great hope through his triple century in Test cricket, becoming only the second Indian after Virender Sehwag to score 300 runs in a Test innings, Nair hasn’t had much opportunity to prove himself in the Indian national camp. He has played only six tests and two One-Day Internationals for India.

The highlight of Nair’s Test career is when he scored 303 runs against England in 2016. He could not continue to stay within the team after such a feat, and most of his international cricketing life has been confined to the periphery. His skills and potential as a match-winner are very apparent in domestic cricket, which presents a stark contrast.

Future Roadmap: IPL and Beyond

In 2025, after a two-year hiatus, Karun Nair will return to the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Delhi Capitals had purchased him for Rs 50 lakh during the IPL 2025 mega auction. His return to the league could serve as a platform where he might hope to make an impact, and it might be an opportunity for him to revive his international aspirations.

In international games, though limited in exposure, Nair has remained consistently brilliant. Big scoring that happened during the Vijay Hazare Trophy and proved himself well on the cricket grounds was testimony of his ability. Further breaks and more match-winning performances can surely raise some interest if it continues with further international matches to show them, proving he also translates in terms of being given international cricket matches at all times.

Karun Nair’s feat in the Vijay Hazare Trophy is another feather in his cap. He surpassed James Franklin’s record of runs made without being dismissed, which is a long-standing record. Therefore, Nair has created a unique place for himself in the world of List-A cricket. With his good form, particularly in domestic cricket, there is still hope that Nair will one day get another chance to shine on the international stage. For now, though, he remains a player capable of achieving great things, both for Vidarbha and for his future IPL franchise.
