In a strategic move ahead of their T20I series against Bangladesh, New Zealand has opted to withdraw Captain Kane Williamson and bowler Kyle Jamieson from the squad. This decision, based on recent medical advice and considering the team’s upcoming schedule, aims to prioritize the duo’s readiness for the upcoming Test series against South Africa and Australia.
Williamson, recently returning to play in India and Bangladesh, will undergo a period of knee rehabilitation and strengthening. Mitchell Santner, with 14 occasions of leading the team, will step in as captain in Williamson’s absence.
Kyle Jamieson, a crucial part of New Zealand’s bowling attack, will be rested to avoid risks ahead of the busy Test schedule against South Africa and Australia in the new year. Consequently, he will miss both the series against Bangladesh and the T20 series against Pakistan in January.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) stated in a Friday release that the decision aligns with the team’s focus on the upcoming Test series. Coach Gary Stead emphasized the importance of having both Williamson and Jamieson in peak condition for the challenges ahead.
Stead spoke about the fresh medical advice that guided the decision, stating, “We want both Kane and Kyle to be in the best possible place leading into the next block of Test cricket against South Africa and Australia.” He highlighted that a period of rehabilitation and conditioning was deemed the best option for both players.
As replacements, young talents Rachin Ravindra and Jacob Duffy have been added to the squad for the Bangladesh series. Stead expressed confidence in the duo, citing Duffy’s experience in T20 cricket and Ravindra’s eagerness to learn and develop across all formats.
The new-look New Zealand T20I squad, under Santner’s captaincy, includes promising players like Finn Allen, Mark Chapman, and the added strength of Ravindra and Duffy.
