Josh Tongue: England’s latest Test debutant against Ireland

Josh Tongue will play his first Test match against Ireland, replacing Chris Woakes. Here’s everything you need to know about the latest debutant.

Josh Tongue will make his Test debut against Ireland tomorrow (June 1) as Chris Woakes was passed over for England’s first summertime Test. Here is all the information you need to know about England’s newest fast bowler.

England recently unveiled their starting lineup for the Lord’s Test match after Tongue was added to the squad last week. In first-class cricket, the 25-year-old plays for Worcestershire and has taken 11 wickets in this year’s County Championship. He has played four games in the County Championship this year as a right-arm fast bowler, with an average of 41.45 and an economy rate of 4.43.

Tongue replaced Chris Woakes in the starting lineup. After the birth of his second child, Mark Wood went back home to be with his family, while Jimmy Anderson and Ollie Robinson are attending to minor injuries in preparation for the Ashes. Woakes’ persistent injury has kept him out for more than a year. In England Tests, the 34-year-old has a bowling average of 22.63.

This year in the County Championship, Josh Tounge claimed one of Australia’s top batters, Steve Smith. Smith’s first County Championship game this season was against him. He later dismissed India’s number 3 batter, Cheteshwar Pujara, in the same match.

On May 30, Tongue offered his thoughts on his decision, saying: “It’s an amazing feeling. [I’m] speechless, really. Even from when I got the first call-up to be in the squad… now being in the actual team, it’s just a dream come true really.”

Before it was known that Tongue would make his debut on Monday, England’s head coach Brendon McCullum discussed Tongue’s presence in the squad. McCullum remarked, “He’s a big strong lad, that’s for sure, he looks like he bowls quite fast and has some real skills. He is obviously a bit of a rough diamond. He’s had some injuries throughout his career and it is nice for a guy like him to be able to have an extended period of time where he has been injury-free this summer to push his case.”
