England’s skipper, Jos Buttler, has affirmed his strong intention to remain as captain after the team’s disheartening loss to Sri Lanka in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, which has significantly dimmed their title defense hopes.
England faced a comprehensive defeat, getting bowled out for 156 at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, which Sri Lanka chased down within 26 overs, resulting in an eight-wicket loss – the team’s fourth loss in five games at the prestigious tournament.
While the loss to Sri Lanka hasn’t mathematically ruled England out of the semifinals, the chances seem slim. Buttler acknowledged the disappointment, saying, “It certainly looks that way, and that’s incredibly disappointing. You get on the plane to come to India, and we’re in a really good position as a team. Everything looked like it was going according to plan, but it just hasn’t worked at all.”

Buttler, who captained England to the ICC T20 World Cup title in Australia last year, has faced mixed results in his tenure as ODI team captain since taking over from Eoin Morgan in 2022.
When asked about his determination to continue as captain, Buttler responded, “I certainly have a lot of confidence and belief in myself as a leader and captain, and first and foremost as a player, but if you’re asking if I should still be captaining the team, that’s a question for the guys above me.”
Despite the team’s challenging title defense, Buttler is resolute about leading the squad and aims to make a strong impact through both his leadership and personal performance.
