Jasprit Bumrah To Miss Vice-Captaincy For England Tour

Jasprit Bumrah to miss vice-captaincy job for England tour, one of these 2 players likely to be Rohit Sharma’s second-in-command: Report

Having taken India to their sole victory in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 on Australian soil, Jasprit Bumrah to miss vice-captaincy position for the Test series in England. Bumrah not being the vice-captain during the England tour has nothing to do with his leadership. It is most likely to be the case as Bumrah might not feature in all five matches.

We need a player who will be present for the entire five Test matches, and he must be given the vice-captain’s position. Bumrah is not going to feature in all five games, so we don’t need to give different deputies for different games. It would be better if the captain and vice-captain must be sure and feature in all five Tests,” the sources informed the Indian Express.

According to the English newspaper, the selectors are considering two names to serve as Rohit Sharma’s deputy. The only captaincy candidate in his 30s is KL Rahul, but he will not be given the leadership position. Alternatively, a 23-year-old Yashasvi Jaiswal is too young to be given the position. Two players who can be considered vice-captains are 25-year-old Shubman Gill and 27-year-old Rishabh Pant.

Bumrah injured his lower back in the fifth and last Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. It made him miss the limited-overs series versus England and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He also missed some matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.

Shastri’s tip to team management

Last month, previous head coach Ravi Shastri requested the team management to be ‘very careful’ while handling Bumrah during the England tour. He knows how tempting it will be, but doesn’t want Bumrah to feature in all the games in the tour.

“I would be very, very careful [with Bumrah],” Shastri stated during an interview with The ICC Review.

I would provide him with two Test matches consecutively and then wait for the break. Ideally, get him to play four. You will want to get him to play five if he gets off to a good start, but it’s how his body pulls up. He needs to be given the first chance to say, ‘Yes, a little, [I am] feeling the niggle. A break would help.’ Provide him with that break.”

Following the IPL 2025, India will travel to England. The five-Test series will start on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds.
