Indian cricket is on air with a sea of woes since his big ace-fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, will not play in this World Cup due to debilitating anxiety surrounding his long-standing lower back injury. Bumrah’s injury will create India a serious gap in their speed attack pace. Indeed, this seems to be an open invitation for shakings in a cricket squad, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has started to shake things up by naming fast bowler Harshit Rana and wrist spinner Varun Chakravarthy as Bumrah’s replacements.
Another Blower for Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah’s back injury has flared up again, forcing him to sit out the ICC championship for the second consecutive year. The ace bowler had missed the World Cup last year for the same reason. Bumrah had sustained minor injuries on the recent tour of Australia but has failed to recover fully to travel for the tournament in England.
This marked the second ICC event for which Bumrah will miss out, following his absence from the 2022 T20 World Cup with a similar back issue. The fast bowler was part of treatments and rehabilitation at the NCA in the hope of regaining fitness but failed to do so adequately enough to be chosen for the championship.
Rana to Join Squad Instead of Bumrah

Harshit Rana was chosen by the BCCI to replace Bumrah, who is sidelined for the big tournament. The pacer made his debut in a One-Day International recently against England, and now he is all set to join the Indian camp for the Champions Trophy. While Rana may not have tasted more than a few matches at the international level, he gives India an added pace option that joins Shami and Arshdeep Singh—all seasoned fast bowlers.
For his consistent showing in domestic cricket and having played against England recently, Harshit Rana has been qualified as a replacement for Bumrah when the stakes are high.
Varun Chakravarthy Also Joined the Squad

Alongside Harshit Rana, the Indian team will also see the inclusion of the right-arm spinner Varun Chakravarthy for the Champions Trophy. His entry into the squad comes after a stellar showing in India’s last limited-overs series in England, where he turned the tide for India with his spin bowling. Varun Chakravarthy came in as Yashasvi Jaiswal replaced him in the squad, and Jaiswal was also designated under the non-traveling reserve.
The selection of Varun Chakravarthy enhances the spin options along with Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja. His mystery magic and ability to compel the batters to think on their feet will add a vital component to this squad, especially in the tough contexts of an ICC stage.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, Mohammad Siraj, and Shivam Dubey have been named non-traveling reserves.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was an original member, has been put into the non-traveling reserve due to these changes. In addition to him, the BCCI has included Mohammad Siraj and Shivam Dubey as traveling reserves who can fill in during the forthcoming series in case there are some injuries or some other unforeseen circumstances that require a change in the playing XI.
Non-traveling reserves shall remain on standby and available should need be.
Here is the updated Indian squad for the Champions Trophy.
Following the changes, the final squad for India’s campaign at the ICC Champions Trophy is as follows:
Main Squad:
Rohit Sharma (c)
Shubman Gill (VC)
Virat Kohli
Shreyas Iyer
KL Rahul (wk)
Rishabh Pant (wk)
Hardik Pandya
Axar Patel
Washington Sundar
Kuldeep Yadav
Harshit Rana
Mohammad Shami
Arshdeep Singh
Ravindra Jadeja
Varun Chakravarthy
Non-traveling reserves:
Mohammed Siraj
Yashasvi Jaiswal
Shivam Dubey
Key Date: ICC deadline for changes to squads.
The last date for any team changes to be received by the ICC was February 11; this means that any alterations after that date would need to be sanctioned by the ICC technical committee. For now, the squad remains set with the changes under BCCI, while Team India hopes to start its preparation for the Champions Trophy with the newly selected squad.
Jasprit Bumrah’s absence from the Indian cricket team is surely a great blow, especially given his importance in the previous ICC tournaments. But possibly with Harshit Rana and Varun Chakravarthy in the mix, India will pin hopes on these new faces to deliver under the pressure of a big international tournament. Now, it is about the Indian team regrouping and preparing for the ICC Champions Trophy, which remains a maximum essential competition leading into the upcoming World Cup.
