Jack Leach injured, who will replace him for the Ashes?

Jack Leach’s injury leaves a void in the English team for the Ashes series. Find out who could step in and replace the left-arm spinner.

Because of a stress fracture, Jack Leach will be sidelined for the summer. He will not play in the crucial Ashes series. The English squad will have to make the difficult decision to choose a substitute for the left-arm spinner with only 11 days left before the start of the Ashes. Concerns have already been expressed about the Ashes bowling attack due to Ben Stokes’ relatively questionable knee. Leach already played a very important role in holding up one end as the pacers rested.

Who would take Jack Leach’s place?

Joe Root

Until Stokes heals and is able to bowl, Joe Root can roll his arm and bolster the bowling attack. England would be able to choose a 4 pacer bowling attack if Root is able to play as the top off-spinner. With a four-pacer bowling attack, England will be more confident about challenging Australia. Root has taken 54 wickets at an average of 46.07 in 130 test matches. England can choose a spinner if Stokes is healthy enough to bowl and assume the role of the 4th pacer, but until then Root’s off-spin might be their best choice.

Dom Bess

Dominic Bess is most likely England’s best bet for providing Leach-like control while holding up one end with his right-arm off-spin bowling. Bess has previously participated in 14 test matches, taking 36 wickets at an approximate average of 34. He has two hauls of five wickets to his credit. He is also a really useful alternative with the bat. He has scored 319 runs and even a fifty in 14 games. Any batting talent would enhance England’s case because they are dedicated to playing in the Bazball style.

Rehan Ahmed

Rehan Ahmed will turn 19 in August of this year. Only one game has the right-arm leg-spinner played in Pakistan. He bowled over 37 overs in his first game, picking up 7 wickets on a field that was a batting haven at Karachi’s National Stadium. Although Rehan won’t be able to exert the same level of control as Jack Leach, his quick leg-spin bowling might be very important for the home team in the Ashes. Rehan’s prospects of wearing the whites for England could significantly enhance if Stokes can play as an all-rounder.

Will Jacks

In December 2022, Will Jacks also made his debut in Pakistan. In his maiden game, he took six wickets in the first innings. He was subsequently substituted by Rehan Ahmed after failing to take any wickets in the next three innings in Pakistan.

Matthew Parkinson

Matt Parkinson became England’s first-ever concussion substitute last year. Jack Leach is the replacement for whom you should have guessed. He has only taken one wicket in the one test match he has played so far, which was against New Zealand at Lord’s.

Moeen Ali

Moeen Ali had indicated a desire to play for Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum despite his official retirement from Test cricket. The start of The Hundred, which follows the conclusion of the most recent Ashes series, may present an opportunity for the 35-year-old to play some Test cricket. Before retiring, he played 64 test matches for England and claimed 195 wickets. His aggressive batting style can benefit England on flat pitches, adding further more batting depth to the Bazball style of play.
