The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released the Indian team for the T20I series against the West Indies on Wednesday. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli received the selection committee’s two most prominent mentions from the newly appointed Ajit Agarkar-led panel. The great pair’s most recent T20I encounter was in the T20 World Cup semifinal, which England won by a score of 10 wickets against India. During the World Cup, Rohit served as the team’s captain. Hardik Pandya has been tasked with captaining the team while his absence in the game’s shortest format.
Is this the end of the road for Kohli and Rohit from T20Is?
In Twenty20 Internationals, Kohli and Rohit have both been among the finest players for the Indian side. In 115 T20 International games, Kohli has amassed 4008 runs at an average of 52.73 and a strike rate of 137.96. Rohit, meanwhile, has participated in nearly 150 games and amassed 3853 runs. His strike rate is 139.24 and his average is 31.32.
The pair’s statistics have been called into question. For instance, Kohli has scored 1375 runs in 40 games since 2020, averaging 52.88 and having a 137.77 strike rate. While Rohit has amassed 1220 runs at an average of 29.75 and a strike rate of 141.53 in 44 games.
Players are now required to strike at a higher pace in the T20 format. The average for Rohit, who has a strike rate of 141.53 since 2020, is only 29.75. While Kohli has had trouble with his strike rate even after having an average of 52.88 since 2020.
Jos Buttler, who bats for England in a similar position, has amassed 1453 runs since 2020 in 40 games. His strike rate was 149.63 and his average throughout this time was 46.87.
Who will replace Rohit and Kohli?
The BCCI deliberately chose young players with the 2024 T20 World Cup in mind. The selectors have chosen Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal as top-order batters. While Gill and Jasiwal had breakout IPL seasons, Kishan gives the squad an opening batter who can keep wickets. Jaiswal scored 625 runs in the IPL 2023, the most by any uncapped player. This was his first call-up to the T20I side. For a top-order batting position in the T20 setup, someone like Ruturaj Gaikwad, who gained his first call-up to the test squad, is also a contender.
What does it mean for Rohit and Kohli?
Both of them can concentrate on the other two formats because they were not selected for the T20 squad. Later this year, India will be the host nation for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
