As they aimed to secure Shashank Singh, an uncapped player, the team only realized their error after the bid had been finalized. Consequently, auctioneer Mallika Sagar declined to reverse the transaction.
The team ended up acquiring the player at a base price of Rs 20 lakhs after apparently confusing the player’s name during the 2024 IPL auction held on Tuesday in Dubai.

The team aimed to purchase a 19-year-old player who shared the same name but mistakenly acquired the incorrect individual.

During the fast-paced auction round, auctioneer Mallika Sagar announced the name of 32-year-old Shashank, who plays for Chhattisgarh in domestic cricket.
Preity Zinta, co-owner of the Punjab-based franchise, raised her paddle after a quick discussion with her team when Shashank’s name came up for bidding. Just like the other players, she confirmed Shashank’s purchase for the Punjab Kings.

However, after the sale, Ness Wadia and Zinta realized the mistake and pointed it out when the auctioneer moved on to the next set of players, starting with Tanay Thyagrajan.
“Oh! You don’t want the player?” Mallika asked. “We’re discussing Shashank Singh. But the auction’s already closed. Player No. 236 and 237 were both awarded to you, I believe.”
