IPL One-Season Wonders: Unforgettable Performances That Faded Too Soon

There are many players who have achieved instant fame at the IPL past compared to others, but not all of those stories last as long. There are many players who put forth exceptional performances for one season and received worldwide recognition for their accomplishments, but no longer have the opportunity to perform like they were able to do just once before.

IPL One-Season Wonders: Unforgettable Performances That Faded Too Soon

Paul Valthaty – The Benchmark of IPL One-Season Wonders (2011)

The most famous example of an IPL one season wonder is Paul Valthaty’s incredible performance with the Kings XI Punjab in 2011. He burst onto the scene with a brilliant knock of 120 not out from 63 balls versus the defending champions Chennai Super Kings. Valthaty also played a role with the ball, ending the season with 463 runs and high bowling averages.

These numbers overshadowed all the other players on his team through sheer volume alone. Unfortunately for Valthaty, injuries and terrible form (36 runs in two years) then erased him from IPL history.

Swapnil Asnodkar – Rajasthan Royals’ Fearless Opener (2008)

Swapnil Asnodkar was instrumental in the Rajasthan Royals’ success during the very first IPL season in 2008 (championship). Asnodkar was given guidance/shown the way by cricket legend Shane Warne; he played in only 9 games but made himself successful by scoring 311 runs at a phenomenal strike rate of 133.

Asnodkar’s aggressive style of batting was complementary to Graeme Smith’s; despite these very positive factors, he was never able to match his previous success in future seasons and therefore dropped out of the competitive cricket consciousness.

James Faulkner – A Record-Breaking All-Round Season (2013)

The 2013 season of James Faulkner at Rajasthan Royals was an impressive statistical achievement; he was the first player in IPL’s 6-year history to achieve two 5-wicket hauls (in one season) and finished with 28 wickets for the year.

Even though Faulkner continued being utilized as an all-around performer over the next few years, he never had that same amount of success. Thus making him one of the most memorable One-Season Wonders for IPL due to his 2013 season alone.

Manvinder Bisla – The Final Hero for KKR (2012)

The IPL legacy of Manvinder Bisla is defined by one innings that will be remembered forever. In the final of the 2012 IPL he came in for injured Brendon McCullum and won the match with an innings of 89 runs in 48 deliveries. He was a key member of the Kolkata Knight Riders in their first victory in the IPL.

In subsequent seasons with several teams, he was not able to replicate that success level and found himself back on the outside looking in after failing to find a team willing to offer him a contract. Because of this he will be remembered as an IPL one season wonder.

Manpreet Gony – Breakout Pace Star (2008)

In the first IPL season Manpreet Gony was a very talented fast bowler; he took 17 wickets for Chennai Super Kings. He played a major role in helping his team reach the final and was subsequently named to the Indian national team.

In later seasons, due to both inconsistency and their higher economic rates as compared to what they were earlier on, he has not been able to keep up his original performance level.

Siddharth Kaul – Death Overs Specialist (2018)

In 2018, Siddharth Kaul was one of the main bowlers for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. He took 21 wickets and played a crucial role in helping to defend low scores with his knuckleball variation.

After getting a national team call-up, Siddharth Kaul’s performance began to decline rapidly, and he was unable to continue being able to make an impact in subsequent seasons of the IPL.

Saurabh Tiwary – The Next Big Thing That Wasn’t (2010)

Because of his environment and the way he plays cricket, Saurabh Tiwary has often been referred to as the next MS Dhoni during his career. In 2010, he played for Mumbai Indians and scored 419 runs and was awarded Under-23 Player of The Tournament. Even though he played in the IPL for many years after his breakout season, Tiwary was unable to replicate that level of success again.
