Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, one of the most awaited T20 competitions, was temporarily suspended on May 9 amid growing geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan. Nevertheless, after a ceasefire agreement, the tournament is going to restart soon.
The IPL chairman mentioned a bright outlook given overseas players coming back to teams, but nothing is guaranteed at this moment. If the rest of IPL 2025 is to be played without overseas players, there will be teams that are affected. Here is the rundown of five IPL 2025 teams that will see an impact with their overseas players not being available to them.
List of the top 5 teams to be affected after the overseas players’ departure
1. Punjab Kings (PBKS)

Domestic Core Provides Resilience, Challenges Exist
Punjab Kings (PBKS) are not reliant on their foreign players, but PBKS not having foreign stars for the IPL 2025 will still be problematic for their franchise. In PBKS’ defence, their Indian core has managed to deliver match-winning performances.
Indian Stars Stepping Up: Prabhsimran Singh, Priyansh Arya, and skipper Shreyas Iyer have formed the core of PBKS’s batting lineup, together scoring more than 63% of the team’s runs this season.
Indian Bowling Pair on Song: Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal have also played a key role, claiming half (30) of the team’s 60 wickets thus far in IPL 2025.
Disappointing Performances by Overseas Players
The overseas players in PBKS have failed to deliver:
Josh Inglis, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Marcus Stoinis have not been able to make much of an impact.
Marco Jansen has exhibited flashes of brilliance but was not consistent.
Glenn Maxwell, a player expected to play a significant role, had a poor season before he left due to injury.
Indian Youth Talent Might Come to the Forefront
If the season were to end up without overseas players, PBKS has a strong domestic bench to bail them out. Upcoming players like:
Musheer Khan
Yash Thakur
Kuldeep Sen
Vishnu Vinod
They are all likely substitutes who might help fill the gap and create team balance.
2. Delhi Capitals
They are positioned at No. 5 in the points table. This team has been in great form since the start of the tournament, but got back-to-back defeats in in last two games, got no result.
One against SRH, where they could have possibly lost the match, but luckily, rain played a major role, and the match was washed out due to torrential weather. The last game against PBKS was suspended due to a blackout at Dharamsala amidst India-Pakistan war tensions.
Though the team is not majorly reliant on overseas players, with the absence of Mitchell Starc, they will have to face severe problems. Faf du Plessis’s match-winning innings in the powerplay with rich experience will be missed, and the stable innings of Tristan Stubbs in the middle overs. Ashutosh Sharma and Vipraj Nigam will have to take the lead now and carry the weight of added responsibilities.
3. Royal Challengers Bengaluru

In this season, RCB has put up a great show with their team, currently they are at the 2nd position in the points table with 16 points and on the verge of qualifying for the playoffs with over 90% of chances.
The first match after the IPL 2025 resumes will be between RCB vs LSG, which will be the decider for Lucknow Super Giants as they are on the verge of getting eliminated with only 10 points and 1 win in the last 5 matches.
Though has been an all-around team with no major reliance on any foreign player but their star bowler Josh Hazlewood was a crucial pacer who got them early wickets in the powerplay and defended at the time of need in the last over phase.
Other than him, the savage batter in the lower order, Romario Shepherd, smashed the 2nd fastest fifty against CSK at Chinnaswamy, due to which RCB got the important win to secure the top 2 place at the points table.
With the absence of these players, RCB can get affected, but they have some replacements in their bank, such as Swastik Chikara as an explosive batsman and Raseekh Salamdar as a replacement for a pacer.
