IPL 2025: Ruturaj Gaikwad Ruled Out Of IPL 2025, MS Dhoni To Lead CSK Again

Legendary Indian wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni will lead Chennai Super Kings in the rest of the IPL 2025 season. This change comes after Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out on Thursday (April 10) because of an elbow fracture.

MS Dhoni Returns as CSK Captain

Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming confirmed the major update on Thursday.

“Ruturaj Gaikwad ruled out of IPL with a fracture in his elbow. MS Dhoni to take over as captain,” CSK head coach Stephen Fleming told reporters in Chennai on Thursday, ahead of their sixth league match of IPL 2025 against Kolkata Knight Riders at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

CSK’s Struggles Under Gaikwad’s Leadership

Ruturaj Gaikwad got injured during the CSK vs RR match in Guwahati on March 30 when a short ball from Jofra Archer hit him on the elbow. Because of that injury he has been ruled out for the rest of IPL 2025.

This season Gaikwad led Chennai Super Kings in five matches but could only win one. That win came in the first game against Mumbai Indians where CSK won by four wickets. After that the team lost four games in a row against Royal Challengers Bengaluru Rajasthan Royals Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings. Right now CSK is placed ninth on the points table.

Gaikwad started well with a fast fifty scoring 53 runs from 26 balls against Mumbai. But his form dropped after that. He got out for a duck against Bengaluru scored 63 against Rajasthan but could not help CSK win then made 5 and 1 in the next two matches.

Dhoni’s Captaincy Record in the IPL

With Gaikwad out MS Dhoni will now return as captain for the rest of the season. Dhoni last led CSK in 2023 and is the most successful captain in the tournament having won 133 out of 226 matches as captain.
