The IPL franchises are among the most popular in the cricket world. Few teams have as many supporters as the IPL teams. The fact that even the two entrants in the Indian Premier League last year have more than one million Instagram followers demonstrates the craze for IPL teams.
With their high-quality performances and excellent brand-building abilities, IPL teams have amassed a massive fan base over the last 15 years. The ten current IPL teams have more than 50 million Instagram followers.
This list will look at the rankings of the top ten teams based on Instagram followers.
#10 Lucknow Super Giants – 1.8 million followers
The Lucknow Super Giants have the fewest followers of any IPL franchise. On Instagram, they have 1.8 million followers. Last year, the team made its debut and finished in the top four.
This team includes big names like KL Rahul, Gautam Gambhir, Marcus Stoinis, Amit Mishra, and Nicholas Pooran. Their fan base is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years.
#9 Gujarat Titans – 2.1 million followers
Despite joining the IPL in the same year, the Gujarat Titans (GT) had more Instagram followers than the Lucknow Super Giants. One of the key reasons for this is that GT won the league in 2022.
Moreover, GT is home to three of the most well-known cricketers on social media: Hardik Pandya, Rashid Khan, and Shubman Gill. As a result, they swiftly surpassed the 2 million follower threshold.
#8 Punjab Kings – 2.8 million followers
Punjab Kings (PBKS) made their IPL debut in 2008 and have participated in every season thereafter. Despite this, they have less than 3 million Instagram followers.
Perhaps their failure to win an IPL championship, as well as the group’s constant reshuffling, has had an impact on their fan base. PBKS currently has 2.8 million followers on Twitter.
#7 Rajasthan Royals – 2.9 million followers
The inaugural season of the IPL was won by the Rajasthan Royals (RR). They were suspended from the league in 2015, but returned in 2018 with a new ownership group. After their reappearance, RR worked hard to develop a fanbase.
They have 2.9 million Instagram followers. By the end of the IPL in 2023, the Royals should have surpassed the 3 million milestone.
#6 Sunrisers Hyderabad – 3 million followers
Although entering the IPL in 2013, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) has amassed a larger fan base than some of the original clubs. SRH recently surpassed 3 million Instagram followers.
The Hyderabad-based franchise has a devoted following. Despite the team’s poor performance in previous seasons, supporters have always supported SRH.
#5 Delhi Capitals – 3.5 million followers
The Delhi Capitals have not won the IPL championship, although they have been regularly performing since the team’s ownership changed. Formerly known as the Delhi Daredevils, the team’s name was changed to the Delhi Capitals in 2019.
Since the change of ownership, Delhi’s fan base has grown. They presently have 3.5 million Instagram followers.
#4 Kolkata Knight Riders – 3.9 million followers
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the two-time IPL winners, are among the top four most-followed teams on Instagram. On the social networking platform, KKR has about 4 million followers.
While the Knight Riders have done well on the pitch, a large percentage of supporters follow the team because of its owner, Shah Rukh Khan.
#3 Royal Challengers Bangalore – 10.3 million followers
Only three IPL teams have more than 10 million Instagram followers. One of them is the Bangalore-based Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). RCB has yet to win an IPL championship, but they have amassed a sizable fan base.
While playing for the franchise, players such as Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers kept the spectators delighted. The fact that the most-followed Asian on Instagram, Virat Kohli, plays for RCB is also a huge factor for the team’s appeal.
#2 Chennai Super Kings – 11.4 million followers
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) nearly missed out on top spot in this ranking. The four-time winners have 11.4 million Instagram followers. They made their debut in 2008 and have made the playoffs in practically every season since.
MS Dhoni is one of the primary reasons for CSK’s success on the field and on social media. Many Chennai supporters support the team because of Dhoni.
#1 Mumbai Indians – 11.5 million followers
Mumbai Indians (MI), the five-time IPL winners, are ranked first on this list. MI have won the most IPL championships. Big players like Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah call them home.
This franchise has also been represented by Sachin Tendulkar, Sanath Jayasuriya, Ricky Ponting, Harbhajan Singh, Andrew Symonds, Shaun Pollock, Kieron Pollard, and Lasith Malinga over the years. MI’s brand-building is unparalleled among IPL teams, as seen by their Instagram follower count.
