Why was Virat Kohli fined Rs 24 lakh after the Royal Challengers Bangalore beat the Rajasthan Royals in Bengaluru with a slow over rate? Why was David Warner fined Rs 12 lakh for the Delhi Capitals’ slow over rate on Monday against the Sunrisers Hyderabad? Have you ever wondered what the rules are for keeping slow over rates in the IPL? If you answered yes, here’s a simple explanation.
In the IPL, teams are required to maintain a certain over rate while bowling. The over rate is the number of overs bowled in an hour of play. If a team fails to maintain the required over rate, they are penalized with a slow-over-rate penalty.
Here’s how the IPL slow-over-rate penalties work:
- A team is allowed to take 90 minutes to complete their innings in a T20 match. This includes the time taken for strategic time-outs, wickets, drinks, and other stoppages.
- If a team is found to be bowling at a slower rate than the required over rate, they are given a warning by the umpire.
- If the team continues to bowl slowly, they are penalized with a deduction of 1 IPL point for the first offence. For every subsequent offence, the penalty increases to 2 IPL points.
- In addition to the IPL point deduction, the captain of the team is also fined 25% of their match fee for the first offence. The fine increases to 50% for every subsequent offence.
- If a team is found to be at least 5 overs behind the required over rate, the captain is suspended for the next match.
It is important for teams to maintain the required over rate as slow-over-rate penalties can have a significant impact on the team’s performance in the IPL.
