IPL 2023: Here Are All The New Rules And Formats Introduced This Season

The Indian Premier League will kick off its 16th season in just a few hours. The season opener would pit MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings against the reigning champions Gujarat Titans.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has always put a smile on supporters’ faces. The 16th season might be the most intriguing season in recent years for a variety of reasons. One of the reasons is that the home and away matches have returned after a four-year hiatus. The new regulations that will be implemented this season, though, are undoubtedly the most exciting cause for the enthusiasm.

Here is a list of the new rules in IPL 2023:

Impact player rule

The impact player rule is not a new concept in the world of cricket. From 2020, the Big Bash League has used the impact player rule. The impact player rule has also been tested on the Indian domestic circuit, in the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy.

This regulation or legislation states that teams may substitute throughout the course of play in order to get a better outcome in a match-up or on the pitch. The impact player can be introduced at many moments, including as at the start of an innings, after a wicket falls, after an over ends, after a batsman retires, or even in between overs.

This regulation does not allow an Indian player to be substituted by an international player. Teams may field a maximum of four foreign players. If a team has only chosen three or fewer foreign players, an Indian player may be replaced by an international player.

No team sheets

Captains will not be required to bring team sheets to the toss. This implies that the captain may have a different playing 11 depending on the outcome of the coin toss. The squad will pick a starting 11 and five substitutes who will serve as impact players.

Teams will now be able to contest on-field umpire decisions like as wides and no-balls. This regulation was fully implemented during the just completed Women’s Premier League. This rule will inevitably spark a slew of debates.

Changes brought in by ICC

The ICC implemented many adjustments in September 2022, which are now fully implemented. These modifications will be shown for the first time in IPL 2023.

When a batter is out caught, the replacement batter will appear at the striker’s end, whether the batters cross or not.

One of the most significant changes in cricket since the Covid epidemic has been the absence of saliva on the ball.

Teams will now be penalised for slow over rates. The ICC has said that teams that do not complete their overs quota in the allotted time would be required to deploy an additional fielder in the 30-yard circle for the overs they did not complete in time.

Unfair movement by the fielding side, including the keeper, will result in five penalty runs and a dead ball for the batting team.
