The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were defeated by the Rajasthan Royals by three runs in their fourth encounter of the current Indian Premier League (IPL).
After this setback, the four-time winners stand sixth in the points table, having won two of their last four games. After winning the toss, the hosts chose to bowl first in a closely contested match at their home stadium.
CSK nearly reached their target of 176 runs despite needing 40 runs off the final few of overs. The Royals’ third win in four games came despite a brilliant effort from their skipper, MS Dhoni.
Middle Order
The Chennai Super Kings are a major concern heading into the competition. Ajiyanka Rahane carried on from his performance against the Mumbai Indians. He was aggressive in taking on spinners and fast bowlers.
Devon Conway looked good but couldn’t convert his chances. Shivam Dube, Ambati Rayudu, and Moeen Ali contributed little, resulting in an overabundance. MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja were at their best, leading the Chennai Super Kings to a nearly improbable victory.
If Chennai Super Kings want to succeed, their middle order must play consistently throughout the tournament.
Mahesh Theekshana performance
Chennai Super Kings is well-known for assisting spinners and causing havoc for opposing bowlers. Ravindra Jadeja was the preferred bowler for the Chennai Super Kings, taking two wickets and allowing only 21 runs in four overs.
Theekshana was named to the starting lineup for yesterday’s game. The Sri Lankan spinner had a dismal game for CSK, conceding 42 runs in four overs and failing to pick up a wicket.
If the Chennai Super Kings’ management decides to select him in the starting XI, he must perform well in the following matches.
Injury to Sisanda Magala
Sisanada Magala, the captain of Chennai Super Kings, has been put out of the competition for at least two wickets. He hurt himself while trying a catch, splitting his right hand and suffering split webbing.
Magala bowled well, conceding only 14 runs in his two overs. He battled with his injuries and left the game. It is a major setback for Chennai Super Kings, who are dealing with injuries to Ben Stokes, Deepak Chahar, and MS Dhoni.
On April 17, Chennai Super Kings will meet Royal Challengers Bangalore at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
