International Cricket Matches This Week: Asia Cup, England vs New Zealand, South Africa vs Australia (25.08-31.08)
Some of the most significant international cricket series this year will begin this week. Pakistan and Afghanistan will play the third and final ODI of their series in Sri Lanka before competing in the Asia Cup. This week’s key event takes place on August 30 as Pakistan takes on Nepal in the opening match of the Asia Cup. On the same day as the continental competition, the tours of Australia in South Africa and New Zealand in England will begin. Here is a list of every foreign conflict happening this week.
Pakistan tour of Afghanistan
Afghanistan vs Pakistan, 3rd ODI
The third and final ODI will be held in R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, as opposed to the first two matches, which were held at Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium in Hambantota. Despite a dismal showing with the bat in the first innings, Pakistan won the first game quite quickly. Pakistan scored 201 runs in the first innings thanks to some wickets taken by Afghan spinners. When Pakistan’s quick bowlers responded in the second innings, Haris Rauf took a wicket and eliminated Afghanistan for just 59 runs.
In the second game, Pakistan prevailed by a slim margin of one wicket thanks to Naseem Shah’s continued failure to allow Afghanistan to defeat their Asian rivals. After winning the toss in the second game, Afghanistan elected to bat first. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran set up a strong opening stand. Zadran was removed on 80 runs, missing out on a century, while Gurbaz made 151. Gurbaz, Zadran, Mohammad Nabi, and a brief cameo from captain Hashmatullah Shahidi all contributed runs that helped Afghanistan pass the 300-run threshold in the first innings.
In response, Pakistan made a strong start but swiftly lost wickets in a flurry. At one point they were positioned to chase the target comfortably but from 170-1 they quickly lost the plot and went to 211-6. Shadab Khan came to the team’s aid and nearly completed the game before being run out in the last over. Two fours from Naseem Shah helped snatch the victory.
Asia Cup
Pakistan vs Nepal, Group A
At Multan Cricket Stadium in Multan, Pakistan—one of the co-hosts of the Asia Cup together with Sri Lanka—will play host to Nepal in the opening match. The home team will enter the match as the favoured against Nepal, who just entered the Asia Cup. As they prepare for their match against India, the team led by Babar Azam ought to find this to be a piece of cake.
Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka, Group B
The opening game of Group B might be a thrilling event because this is the group where the competition for the top two spots could be fierce. While Sri Lanka had to compete in the qualifiers, Bangladesh has recently improved and even qualified directly for the ODI World Cup. Despite Bangladesh’s recent success, Sri Lanka would be the small favourite in their own country in what would likely be a thrilling match.
Australia tour of South Africa
South Africa vs Australia, 1st T20I
Australia will start their white-ball tour and ODI World Cup preparations at the same time. The three-match T20I series will be played first, then the three-match ODI series. The visitors have depended largely on their all-rounder department, which includes players like Mitchell Marsh (T20I captain), Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, as well as Cameron Green and Ashton Agar in the ODI squad. Dewald Brevis is the exciting addition to both South African sides. While Marco Jansen, the team lead by Aiden Markram, will be the only true all-rounder on the pitch. Since both teams will be concentrating on the ODI series to prepare for the ODI World Cup, it will be intriguing to see which players participate in the T20I matches.
New Zealand tour of England
England vs New Zealand, 1st T20I
The tour of England by New Zealand will also start with a T20 series and end with a four-match ODI series. For the four-match T20I series, the reigning T20 World Cup champions will play host to New Zealand. Players from both teams who are expected to compete in the ODI World Cup will be put to the test during the T20I series. As they start to move away from their older players, England will look to have a look at some new faces for the T20 World Cup the following year. Englishman Will Jacks is a promising talent who recently enjoyed success in The Hundred with both bat and ball. Most of New Zealand’s key players from the ODI lineup make up the T20I team. Trent Boult and Tom Latham are the two prominent players who will be absent from the T20I series. The ODI team includes both of them.
