Shubman Gill had one of the best Indian Premier League (IPL) seasons before a run of poor performances. In IPL 2023, he was the standout performer for the champion Gujarat Titans.
After the IPL 2023, India took part in the World Test Championship final. Gill, the IPL 2023 champion, only managed to score 13 and 18 against Australia, failing to make an impression.
India’s current match is in West Indies after the team decided to experiment in the ODIs during the WTC tournament. For the second ODI, the management rested prominent players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
As they opened the batting, Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill combined for 90 runs for the first wicket. Ishan Kishan, on the other hand, scored a second fifty-plus, while Gill only amassed 34 runs and struck out at 69.4.
Rahul Dravid defends Shubman Gill
India’s head coach Rahul Dravid offered his support for the young batter after inquiries over his performance. He said, “I won’t worry so much about Shubman. He is batting really well, he looks really good. It can happen, you can’t criticise people after every single game. These things can happen, it’s not easy batting conditions. We needed to grind and fight it out there. Shubman is an important part of all the three formats now.”
Rahul Dravid praises Ishan Kishan
Unlike Shubman Gill, whose tour has thus far been forgettable, Ishan Kishan’s has been very different. Indian opener Ishan Kishan got half-centuries in both of the ODI matches thus far. Rahul Dravid commended Kishan on his performance for making the most of the opportunities that were presented to him. He said, “Ishan has done really well. This is the third fifty in a row now counting the Test matches. He is taking the opportunities when he is given the chance. That’s all we ask from young players.”
India triumphed in the first ODI but lost the second. They only managed 181 when they batted first. After achieving the total in 37 overs, the home team prevailed by four wickets. The teams will play their final ODI on Tuesday before beginning their five-match T20I series.
With only a few games left before the Asia Cup and the crucial World Cup, the ODI series is of the utmost significance for India. On the other side, this series marks the beginning of the West Indies’ reconstruction of the white-ball setup. For the first time in their history of cricket, the 1975 and 1979 World Cup champions did not make the cut.
