India claimed the top spot in the new ICC Test rankings after winning the first Test clash against Australia in Nagpur. The overwhelming victory has given Rohit Sharma and Co 115 points, four more than the second-placed Australians. England is now in third place with 106 points, but they will have an opportunity to improve their position when they face New Zealand in a Test series beginning February 16. With superb spells on a pitch that aided their bowling, the Indian spin combination of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja raised their rankings significantly.
The Indian cricket team is now ranked first in all three formats of the game.
Ashwin has gone closer to the top of the bowlers’ rankings, while Jadeja has moved higher. The two spinners combined for 15 wickets to hold the Australian batsmen at bay.
Ashwin took 5/37 in the second innings, adding to his earlier 3/42 total. Australia’s Pat Cummins currently leads the rankings, although Ashwin is only 21 rating points behind him.
According to the ICC website, young West Indies spinner Gudakesh Motie made his debut with 19 wickets in two Tests against Zimbabwe, and has risen 77 places to 46th after only three Tests. India skipper Rohit Sharma improved his position as well, with his stunning century against Australia in Nagpur propelling him from tenth to ninth place.
