ICC ODI Rankings: Shubman Gill rises to fifth spot

India’s top order batter Shubman Gill rose to fifth position while fellow opener Ishan Kishan jumped nine places to be placed at 36th in the latest ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankings for batters, released on Wednesday.

In the most recent ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankings for batters, which were revealed on Wednesday, India’s top order batsman Shubman Gill climbed to the fifth spot while fellow opener Ishan Kishan climbed nine spots to be ranked 36th.

During India’s recent 2-1 ODI series victory against the West Indies, Gill and Ishan were among the team’s standout batsmen, combining for 310 runs in the three games.

In the batter’s rankings, Gill moved up two spots to take over fifth place from Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam. After a strong series against the West Indies, the Indian batsman increased his rating to 743 points, and he is now within striking distance of Imam-ul-Haq (745) and third-placed Fakhar Zaman (755) in the rankings.

As a result of his performance against the West Indies, veteran all-rounder Hardik Pandya rose 10 spots to tie for 71st, while Kishan achieved a new career high rating of 589.

Pandya moved up five spots to rank 11th overall among ODI all-rounders, but the bowlers who had the most impact on the rankings were left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav and seamer Shardul Thakur.

Following his seven wickets in the series against the West Indies, Kuldeep moved up four ranks and into the top 10 at position 10, while Thakur, who led both teams with a series-high eight takedowns, moved up three spots to position 30.

Tilak Varma, a recent addition from India, debuted on the batter list in the T20 rankings at number 46 after an impressive start to his international career.

On August 3, the young man made his debut for India in a five-match T20I series against the West Indies. In the first T20I in Trinidad, he led India in scoring with 39 off 22 deliveries. The following match, he produced another outstanding performance, scoring 51 off 41 deliveries with five fours and a six.

The 20-year-old batsman hit an unbeaten 49 in Tuesday’s third T20 but was unable to reach 50 for a second time in a row.

However, from an Asian perspective, Kuldeep (up 36 spots to 51st) is the bowler on the list who will get the most attention.
