The ICC (International Cricket Council) has asked Cricket Canada (CC) for more details regarding the theft and fraud allegations against their new CEO, Salman Khan. Khan was charged by Calgary Police in March for incidents that allegedly occurred when he was the president of the Calgary and District Cricket League (CDCL) from 2014 to 2016.
Salman Khan, who was appointed as the CEO of Cricket Canada in January, has strongly denied these allegations. However, the ICC wants to “look into the matter further.” The treasurer of CDCL has also been charged for the same alleged crimes.
The ICC letter, signed by William Glenwright, the general manager of development, says that the charges are related to the alleged misappropriation of around CAD $200,000 by Khan and an accomplice (the league’s treasurer) between 2014 and 2016.
The letter asks four specific questions:
-
What process did Cricket Canada follow to hire its new CEO?
-
Did anyone in the board know about the allegations against Khan during the recruitment process?
-
If not, when did Cricket Canada become aware of the allegations?
-
What actions, if any, has Cricket Canada taken regarding this matter?
While the ICC is only asking for information at this point, certain sections of the ICC’s code of ethics could be relevant here, including Section 2.2.3.3: “A director must inform the ICC Board of any matter that may reasonably be considered to impact decision-making at the ICC Board level to ensure transparency.”
In March, Khan posted a statement on Facebook denying the allegations. He wrote, “I see many fake and self-created posts circulating around, and I want to set the record straight. First of all, these are all fake. I have never been arrested, detained, or on any bail. These claims are completely false, and those spreading these rumors will have to answer for it.”
He continued, “They have nothing to prove against me. In 7 years, they could not prove anything in the civil case, and certainly not in any criminal case. I have over 21 transcripts, with the complainant even admitting that everything was false.”
He added, “I’m not worried at all. I’m ready to fight just like I’ve been doing for the past 8 years.”
Conclusion
This case could be significant for both Cricket Canada and Salman Khan’s reputation. After the ICC receives the requested information, it will be important to see what actions are taken next. Given the importance of transparency and responsibility in the cricket world, there may be several decisions made on this matter in the coming months.
