Yashasvi Jaiswal has set the Test cricket stage ablaze. In just seven appearances representing India, he has amassed a staggering 861 runs, boasting two double centuries and a century, accompanied by two other solid fifty-plus knocks. A significant chunk of this remarkable run came in the current series against England at home, where he piled up 545 runs in six innings, featuring both those monumental double tons. The second Test in Vizag witnessed him scoring 209, and he followed it up with an unbeaten 214 in the third Test in Rajkot, both contributing to India’s convincing victories. Amidst the cricket world’s fervour over the left-hander’s spectacular performance, Yashasvi’s childhood coach, Jwala Singh, unfolded the story that initiated it all—a surprising phone call from the Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma.

In a conversation with the press following the home team’s record-breaking triumph by 434 runs in the third Test against England, Singh shed light on Yashasvi teaming up with Rohit as India’s openers. It was during this discussion that Singh delved into a phone call received by the young cricketer nearly five years ago when he was part of the Mumbai state team.
Singh recounted how Rohit Sharma, playing for Mumbai, made the call on a teammate’s phone, specifically asking for Yashasvi. The current skipper informed him that he was destined to be part of the national team.
“Rohit is a phenomenal player, representing Mumbai. I recall a day when Yashasvi shared a fascinating story. He was playing for Mumbai, and Rohit called on a teammate’s phone, expressing his desire to speak with Yashasvi. This incident dates back about 4-5 years. Rohit told Yashasvi Jaiswal, ‘You are meant to be here where I am right now.’ Yashasvi promptly called me, brimming with excitement, to share the news. Now, Rohit is not only his captain but also his opening partner, fostering a unique level of comfort,” reminisced Singh.

Rohit and Yashasvi have now shared the crease in 13 innings, amassing a commendable 788 runs together, including two-century partnerships.
Despite Yashasvi’s recent acclaim for his stellar batting performances, the Indian captain has chosen to remain reserved in his praise for the budding talent.
“I’ve talked extensively about him. I’m certain people outside the changing room have been discussing him as well. I want to maintain a sense of calm about him and not excessively discuss him. He has initiated his career on a remarkable high,” shared Rohit in the post-match presentation on Sunday.
