Scenarios needed to reach the World Test Championship Final: Recently, India’s standings at the World Test Championship points table were affected. They lost the Test Series at home against New Zealand by losing two Tests out of three and broke their 12-year streak of being unbeaten at home. So, what does India have to do to reach the WTC final?
Which other teams are in the race apart from India?

There are only 20 Test matches left in this year’s World Test Championship (WTC), but India’s two defeats seem to have messed up their chances of reaching the final. Let’s explore India’s chances.
India’s chances in World Test Championship final
The two unexpected defeats against New Zealand mean that India will now have to work hard to reach their third consecutive WTC final. Although they are still at the top of the points table, to remain in the top two, India will now have to win the last Test in Mumbai and also win the Border Gavaskar Trophy 3-2. This will take India’s points percentage to 64.04%.

In such a situation, even if Australia wins 2-0 in Sri Lanka, their points percentage will remain 60.53%. If New Zealand loses in Mumbai and beats England 3-0 at home, they will have 57.14% points. In such a situation, only South Africa can beat India. If India draws the series 2-2 in Australia, India will have 60.53% points while Australia will have 62.28% points.

If India loses in Mumbai as well, then New Zealand can reach a maximum of 64.29% points. However, for this, New Zealand will have to beat England 3-0 at home. Then India will need four wins and a draw in Australia.

However, India can remain in the top two even with fewer wins, but then they will also have to depend on the results of other teams. For example, if India wins the Mumbai Test and New Zealand beats England 2-0 at home, then they will have only 52.38%. If South Africa loses even one of its five test matches, they will be down to 61.11%. If Australia beats India 3-2 and draws 1-1 with Sri Lanka, they will only have 60.53% points, which will be less than India.
