England’s New Direction: Harry Brook Appointed as ODI and T20 Captain
England’s white-ball cricket has entered a new chapter. On Monday, April 7, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced that Harry Brook will now lead the team in both One Day Internationals (ODIs) and T20 matches. This decision comes after Jos Buttler stepped down as captain following England’s early exit from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Brook has played across all formats
Harry Brook has become an important part of the England team in Test, ODI and T20 cricket in recent years. Earlier this year, he was named vice-captain of the white-ball team. So far, he has played 26 ODIs and 44 T20Is for England.
Brook gets emotional after becoming captain
After getting the captaincy, Harry Brook shared his feelings and said,
“It’s a big honor to become England’s captain. Since my childhood, when I played cricket at Burley in Wharfedale, I dreamed of playing for Yorkshire, then for England and maybe one day leading the team. Now that I’ve got this chance, it means a lot to me.”
He also thanked those who supported him:
“My family and coaches have always stood by me. Their support has helped me reach here. Now I want to give my best to England with full energy,” he added.
Out of IPL, focused on England
While most England players are busy in IPL 2025, Brook chose to skip the tournament. He made this decision to focus on his new role as captain. Because of this, he now faces a two-year ban from the IPL.
Upcoming matches and Brook’s debut as captain
Brook will begin his journey as captain in the upcoming home series against West Indies, which will include three ODIs and three T20Is. Before that, the team is set to tour Zimbabwe for a one-off Test match. The limited-overs series against the West Indies will start on May 29 and end with the final T20I on June 10. These matches will be Brook’s first challenge as the new leader of the team.
Recent performance in white-ball cricket
Brook’s recent form in limited-overs cricket has not been so strong. He scored at an average of 18.20 in five T20Is and 16.16 in six ODIs in 2025. But he was part of the England squad that won the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia.
Harry Brook’s appointment as a captain marks a new beginning for England’s white-ball team. He may help England regain its top spot in world cricket with his young energy and fresh mindset.
Will he be able to take on this big responsibility and succeed? Only time will tell.
