Gujarat Titans (GT) had a brilliant start to their IPL history last year, winning the coveted trophy in their maiden season under the guidance of Hardik Pandya.
While Hardik led the team with both bat and ball, GT found new match-winners in almost every game, including Rashid Khan, David Miller, Shubman Gill, Rahul Tewatia, Abhinav Manohar, and others.
The Titans released four players in addition to trading fast bowler Lockie Ferguson and opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz to KKR ahead of the IPL 2023 auction. The Gujarat Titans have a solid lineup after the auction, as they made seven purchases, bringing in players from all areas of the game.

The Governing Council of the Indian Premier League has issued an invitation to tender for two additional franchises in August 2021. Although 22 companies expressed interest, only six serious bidders materialised due to the high beginning price for the new teams. The Indian Cricket Board allowed three organisations or individuals to compete for each franchise. CVC Capital Partners, a British private equity and investment management firm, won the rights to operate the Ahmedabad franchise with a bid of 5,625 crore (US$700 million).
CVC Capital Partners won the Ahmedabad franchise in an auction held in Dubai in October 2021. Hardik Pandya was chosen as the franchise’s captain ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction. The franchise also chose Shubman Gill and Rashid Khan.
On February 9, 2022, the Ahmedabad franchise confirmed the name of its cricket team as the Gujarat Titans.

2022 IPL season
Despite the fact that their auction tactics and selections were deemed poor during their first-ever auction, and the team was written off, the Titans stunned everyone by winning their inaugural game against fellow newcomers Lucknow Super Giants. That was the Titans’ first victory in their inaugural season, which saw them win 10 of their 14 group matches and finish first with 20 points. They then won the first qualifier against Rajasthan Royals, who they would meet again in the final after defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Gujarat won the final after restricting Rajasthan to 130 runs on a pitch where they were instructed to bowl first and chasing it down with 11 balls to spare, with Shubman Gill hitting the winning six off the first ball of the 19th over. Hardik Pandya was named Man of the Match after bowling 3/17 and scoring 34 off 30 balls at a strike rate of 113.33. Several critics praised Pandya’s leadership, bowling, and batting, with many acknowledging that he and the management used their players well and worked as a team to win the tournament.
Gujarat became only the second team in IPL history to win their inaugural season, the first being their final opponent, the Rajasthan Royals. Despite this, Gujarat became the first team in IPL history to win the trophy in their debut game against clubs that have competed since 2008. Hardik’s fifth IPL title, and his first as captain, follows his previous four with the Mumbai Indians.
