Australian cricket legend Gregory Chappell, born on August 7, 1948, led the team from 1975 to 1977. After leaving the MCC, he helped found the World Series of Cricket (W.S.C.) and led it until 1979. Chappell possessed the perfect combination of elegant stroke-making and intense attention, making him the best Australian batsman of his period. He played Test cricket after his two older brothers. Chappell’s career spanned two eras. In the first, he was a great all-rounder who bowled at a medium pace. In the second, he held the world record for the most catches in Test cricket when he retired. Though Chappell resigned from playing in 1984, he has continued to be active in professional cricket in various other capacities, such as selector for national and Queensland teams, member of the Australian Cricket Board, and coach. He was hired as the Indian cricket team’s coach in 2005 and handed a two-year contract.
Nonetheless, after several problems and conflicts with the team’s personality and India’s dismal performance in the 2007 Cricket World Cup, he resigned on April 4, 2007. Chappell was hired by the Rajasthan Royals to head up their development program and later served as the All-Stars Coach for their 2008 T20 match against Australia. He also serves as the executive coach for a series of Cricket Summer Camps hosted by Chappell Way in various locations around the United States.

- Only four cricket players have made a century in their first and last test matches. Chappell is one of those four. In the 1971 Ashes match against England, he got his first century as a professional. He got a hundred in his last Test match against Pakistan at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
- During his nearly 15-year international career, Chappell scored more than 7,000 runs and gave bowlers a hard time worldwide. He led the Aussies to 21 wins out of 48 games as captain.
Here are some of the lesser-known facts about Greg Chappell:
- The Australian national team officially hired Chappell on October 29, 2010. The poor performance of Australia during his tenure as a selector was a cruel twist of fate. Several players complained about him to the point where the coach decided to bar him from the changing rooms. That led to his removal from the board of selectors in August 2011.
- Chappell’s relationship with the other senior players was tense, but he got along well with Rahul Dravid, captain. The wicketkeeper, Rahul Dravid, was criticized by Chappell in his book Rahul Dravid — Timeless Steel, which he wrote later.
- Despite the controversies that surrounded his stint as an Indian coach, Chappell is credited with the development of players like M.S. Dhoni, Suresh Raina, and Irfan Pathan. The latter contributed to the team as a swing bowler was regularly promoted to a more advantageous batting position and showed that the move was justified by scoring a substantial number of runs.
