Australian limited-overs specialist Glenn Maxwell remains determined to revive his Test cricket career, setting his sights on an away series in the sub-continent after the current ICC World Test Championship cycle as his optimal chance.
Glenn Maxwell, known for his prowess in shorter formats, has participated in just seven Tests, all outside Australia, with his last red-ball appearance over six years ago, as per ICC reports. Despite excelling in T20 cricket, contributing significantly to Australia’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup triumph in 2021 and their recent successful ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup campaign in India, the 35-year-old believes he can make a mark in Test cricket.
Expressing his aspirations, Maxwell aims to be considered for Australia’s final series in the current World Test Championship cycle, slated for Sri Lanka in early 2025. He acknowledges the challenge with the current Test side’s excellent form but believes he could be a valuable asset during sub-continent tours.
“I’m quite understanding the circumstances of the current side. They’re playing some really good cricket, they’re World Test champions,” Maxwell shared on Australian radio station SEN.

“There’s not a lot of spots up for grabs as far as Tests at home, but I know that when it does come to a sub-continent tour, I can be a real viable option to hopefully fill a role in that side.
“I don’t think there’s another sub-continent tour until early 2025. So, I’ll keep trying to plug away and hopefully get an opportunity at that stage.”
Presently gearing up for another domestic Big Bash League campaign in Australia, Glenn Maxwell acknowledges the competitive landscape as his Test teammates prepare for a busy Test summer, including matches against Pakistan and the West Indies.
While discussions circulate about David Warner’s potential retirement, Maxwell refrains from getting involved, instead offering a positive endorsement for his fellow World Cup-winning teammate.
“I’m not going to throw my name into some headlines about this,” Maxwell said. “But Davey’s been an absolute champion of Australian cricket for a long period, and the selectors were pretty clear on what they thought of it (selecting him). I’m looking forward to seeing Davey in that first Test and him making a lot of runs this summer.”
