The former Afghanistan captain gave a piece of advice to all the teams for wrapping out the Indian innings quickly in T20 World Cup 2022. Asghar Afghan was the captain of Afghanistan under whom the legendary players of today like Rashid Khan, Mujibur Rahman and Mohammad Nabi played. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are the backbone of Indian batting department, Kohli just got back into the form after he smashed his 71st international century against Afghanistan in Asia Cup. In 2019, he scored in three figures for the last time against Bangladesh and after three years in 2022, he made another international century.
This bad form was also the reason why BCCI removed him from the captaincy of all 3 formats but many experts like Irfan Pathan and Parthiv Patel criticized this suggestion of Asgar Afghan. Because in the past 2 years the middle order of the Indian team including Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh pant contributed the most with their abilities using the bat. Also, the captain Rohit Sharma scored only two centuries in the past 2 years at the stage of world cricket.
Even according to latest stats KL Rahul was the lone batsman who scored the greatest number of centuries in the top order of Indian team. The Afghanistan team placed in the group A for the T20 World Cup, where the teams like England, Australia and New Zealand will initially look to eliminate it to grab crucial points in the league. But the opinion of Asgar Afghan could prove vital for the Indian team as the top order contribution got decreased in the past couple of matches.
In a recent interview with Hindustan Times Asgar Afghan said, “We used to say, ‘get them out, half of Indian team is finished’. Especially Virat Kohli. He is a very busy player. When he is set, it is very difficult to dislodge him. We used to believe that if we get both of them out early then about 100-120 runs would be less from India’s total in an ODI and about 60-70 runs in a T20I”.
