When a journalist asked Gambhir about Iyer not being in the red-ball team, Gambhir replied clearly, “I am not the selector.”
Gambhir was not at the team announcement press conference. Instead, chief selector Ajit Agarkar answered all questions about the team.
Gambhir has said before that he does not decide the team, but fans still blamed him for every player left out.
Karun Nair and Sai Sudarshan were picked in the Test squad instead of Iyer. Iyer was dropped from the England Test squad because of his poor form in red-ball cricket, but he has since improved in domestic matches.
Shreyas Iyer IPL Performance Highlights: Runs, Strike Rate, and Leadership
In recent months, Shreyas Iyer has performed very well in both international and domestic cricket. He played five first-class matches and scored two centuries for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy.
Iyer is currently the captain of Punjab Kings in IPL 2025. Punjab finished at the top of the points table and will play Qualifier 1 for the first time in 11 years. They will face Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Shreyas Iyer was bought for ₹23.75 crore by Punjab Kings, making him the second-most expensive player in IPL history.
Iyer played aggressively and led his team well, scoring 514 runs in 14 matches. He has the highest batting average (51.40) among all team captains and a strong strike rate of 171.91.
