Fast-bowler Fatima Sana has been appointed captain for Pakistan’s upcoming second ODI against New Zealand, filling in for regular skipper Nida Dar, who sustained an injury during the first ODI at John Davies Oval in Queenstown.
Nida suffered an impact injury after being struck by a ball while bowling in the 44th over of the innings. Following a medical assessment on Thursday, she displayed symptoms of concussion and has been advised complete rest for the next two days. Her availability for the third ODI remains uncertain pending further evaluation.
This marks Fatima’s ascent as the 10th captain in the history of Pakistan women’s team in the ODI format. Her recent remarkable comeback saw her earn the Player of the Series award in Pakistan’s victorious 2-1 T20I series against New Zealand, bagging six wickets at an impressive economy rate.
Expressing honor at leading the team, Fatima acknowledged Nida Dar’s inspiration and wished her a speedy recovery. She highlighted the team’s eagerness to perform well, despite the setback faced in the first ODI against New Zealand.
Fatima’s leadership isn’t unfamiliar, having previously captained Pakistan women’s emerging team in the ACC Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup. Her success in domestic cricket, notably leading PCB Blasters to victory in the T20 Women’s Cricket Tournament, adds to her credentials.
Additionally, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed that right-arm fast bowler Diana Baig, initially ruled out due to a finger injury, has undergone surgery and will be sidelined from competitive cricket for four weeks.
