Fans hail Shubman Gill as “Next Big Thing in World Cricket” after another magnificent century

Shubman Gill, who hit a remarkable double century in the first ODI, finished the series with a 112-run knock.

Shubman Gill, Team India’s youthful opener, continued his good record with the bat, scoring another beautiful century in the third ODI against New Zealand at Holkar Stadium in Indore. The 23-year-old, who smashed a remarkable double century in the first ODI, capped off the series with a 112-run effort. Gill asserted his dominance against the Kiwi bowlers on a calm Indore surface.

After Shikhar Dhawan was left out of the ODI squad for the Sri Lanka series, the team management supported the promising opener and set him up as the openerย with skipper Rohit Sharma. Ishan Kishan warmed the bench for the Sri Lanka series despite making a double century in the Bangladesh series, so Shubman was given the long rope as the opener.

Shubman has been scoring consistently well for India in the last two ODI series, paying back the captain’s and coach’s faith in him.

On Tuesday, Gill and Rohit shared a whopping 212-run partnership, the best by any opening duo against New Zealand in ODIs. The Indian captain also snapped his ODI century drought with a 101-run knock.

Gill, who generally takes his time in the middle, appeared aggressive from the start, reaching the triple-figure milestone in just 72 balls. With his 112-run performance in the final ODI, Gill equaled Babar Azam’s record of most runs scored in a three-match ODI series, having amassed 360 runs against New Zealand in the ongoing series.

Shubman’s furious batting once again surprised the cricketing fraternity and spectators.

Meanwhile, in the third and final ODI, New Zealand captain Tom Latham won the toss and chose to field first, but the choice backfired as Rohit and Shubman attacked the bowlers from the start.

India, who had an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, made two changes, replacing Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami with Umran Malik and Yuzvendra Chahal.
