Ex-India all-rounder Rishi Dhawan, who played the 2024/25 Ranji Trophy for Himachal Pradesh, has made the headlines after turning up for Max 60 in the Caribbean. As per the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) standard prohibitions on active players participating in foreign T20 leagues, most supporters have been wondering: How is Rishi Dhawan allowed to participate in the Max 60?
Rishi Dhawan’s Career Snapshot

Rishi Dhawan played for India in four international games in 2016, three ODIs and one T20I against Zimbabwe. His returns in international cricket were:
12 ODI runs & 1 wicket
1 T20I wicket
For domestic cricket, though, Dhawan has been a consistent performer:
4,925 first-class runs and 41.73 & 355 wickets
2,906 List A runs & 186 wickets
1,740 T20 runs & 118 wickets
He has also played 39 IPL matches, representing Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians across 12 seasons.
How Rishi Dhawan Became Eligible for Max 60
Rishi Dhawan retired from Indian white-ball cricket after Vijay Hazare Trophy despite playing for Himachal Pradesh in all formats (Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy) in the 2024/25 domestic season.
While bidding an emotional farewell, the 34-year-old said:
“With a heavy heart, though I have no regrets, I’d like to declare my retirement from Indian cricket (Limited overs). This game has brought me immeasurable joy and memories galore which will always remain close to my heart.”
BCCI’s Policy Permits Retired Players to Play Abroad
The BCCI’s new policy now allows Indian cricketers to play in overseas T20 leagues such as Max 60 on one condition:
Only players who have formally retired from international and IPL cricket are permitted to play in foreign leagues.
As Rishi Dhawan is no more a part of India’s white-ball team (ODIs, T20Is) or the IPL, and has announced retirement from limited-overs cricket, he is eligible to play for the Caribbean’s Max 60 league.
Other Indian Players in Max 60
Rishi Dhawan is not alone. Ankit Rajpoot, yet another Indian cricketer who hung up his Indian cricket boots in December 2024, is also a part of Max 60, highlighting how the new policy of the BCCI is providing international opportunities to the former domestic heroes.
What is Max 60?
Max 60 is an exhilarating, high-energy cricket game that started in the Caribbean. It is played in innings of 60 balls for each team. The tournament is gaining global recognition as one of the premier entertainment and cutting-edge sports events. Even retired Indian legends are getting involved, like Rishi Dhawan.
