Former Sri Lankan Cricketer Sachithra Senanayake Arrested on Match-Fixing Charges

Sachithra Senanayake, a former Sri Lankan cricketer, was apprehended on Wednesday following allegations of match-fixing. He presented himself before the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of the Sports Ministry.

Senanayake is scheduled to appear in court later in the day. In a preceding development, the Colombo Magistrate had issued an order last month, preventing the 38-year-old from traveling abroad for three months. This directive stemmed from an instruction by the Attorney General (AG) to the SIU to formulate criminal charges against the former cricketer.

According to the allegations, Senanayake purportedly contacted two cricketers during the inaugural edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) in 2020 while in Dubai, attempting to manipulate match outcomes.

Senanayake, who had previously represented Sri Lanka in 73 white-ball matches, accumulating 78 international wickets, has vehemently denied all accusations, asserting their falsehood and lack of basis. In 2021, Senanayake’s anticipatory bail plea before the Colombo Magistrate was rejected.
