The formal chief selector of the Indian team, Dilip Vengsarkar opted to go with the trio of Shubman Gill, Umran Malik and Mohammed Shami for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022. Dilip Vengsarkar remained the chairman of the selection committee for 3 years and was renowned in the business for picking the horses for courses.
Mohammed Shami has the one flaw which doesn’t allow him to get fixed into the playing 11 of Indian T20 team. His death bowling is slightly off colour as compared to the other horses like Jaspreet Bumrah, Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. In his arsenal of bowling, he only has the weapon of your Yorker, which even doesn’t have sharp accuracy and pitching. Though the pitches of Australia will provide movement and nip to Mohammed Shami but still in T20s death bowling has far greater importance.
The probable pace bowling unit of Indian team would consist of the stalwarts like Jasprit Bumrah, Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Because This combination provides the artillery of Swing, Seam and Death bowling, which is the prime need on the tracks of Australia. This would also be the thinking of the Indian team management for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022.
According to him, the duo of Mohammed Shami and Umran Malik can prove very effective on the bouncy tracks of Australia. But the current chairman of the selection committee, Chetan Sharma, neglected Umran Malik due to his inexperience and Mohammed Shami was appointed as a replacement bowler. It would be very interesting to see how this combination will work for the Indian team under the new captaincy of Rohit Sharma. Dilip Vengsarkar was the former cricketer of the Indian team who played 116 test matches and 126 one-day international games between 1976-1992. The era in which he appeared for the Indian team was completely different from today’s modern cricket but still he is considered as one of the finest thinkers of the game.
So, while in the conversation with Indian express Dilip Vengsarkar said, “I would have picked Mohammed Shami, Umran Malik and Shubman Gill for the T20 World Cup. Would have given them a long run in T20Is because they all had a brilliant IPL season. I can’t really comment on who bats at what number. It is up to the think tank, the coach, the captain and the vice-captain. But I feel Suryakumar Yadav, who is batting at 4, can bat at 5 as well. He can be a great finisher”.
Later he gave an opinion over the position of batters as per the format of the game, “T20 is not like ODIs and Test cricket, where you need certain batters at certain positions. In this format, anybody can bat anywhere. You don’t have time to settle down. One should go after the bowlers from ball one”.
