The Delhi Capitals, previously known as the Delhi Daredevils, have long been a topic of discussion in the Indian Premier League. They were famous in the early days of the IPL for their world-class hitters and bowlers, but they are now even more famous for their energetic young players, who just led the team to their first IPL Final.
The Delhi Capitals have yet to win an IPL title in 15 seasons and have only appeared in the final once, in 2020.
Delhi Capitals Team History
The GMR Group and JSW Sports Pvt. Ltd. own the Delhi Daredevils of the Indian Premier League.
The Delhi Capitals have been one of the most surprising teams in the World T20. The Delhi Capitals Team has never won the championship despite having some great players over the years. The Delhi Capitals Team has yet to taste the ultimate IPL victory, one that would put an end to the decade-long wait, after 10 years and six leaders.
The DC IPL has seen famous players seize the captaincy and bow to pressure in its pursuit of the IPL title, the majority of which stems from mounting expectations and, ultimately, the final despair of failing to satisfy them.
The Delhi Capitals finished fourth in the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League. However, for more than a decade, the team has consistently ended at the bottom of the points table.

Significant Debut in 2008- 2009
Virender Sehwag was selected the first captain of the Delhi Daredevils in 2008, and they finished fourth in the points table with seven wins and six losses. Delhi lost by 105 runs to eventual champions Rajasthan Royals in the semi-finals. In Delhi’s maiden season, Gautam Gambhir scored the most runs (534), while Yo Mahesh took the most wickets (16).
The Delhi Daredevils reached the semi-finals for the second consecutive season before losing to Adam Gilchrist’s Deccan Chargers by six wickets in the elimination stage. AB de Villiers became the Delhi franchise’s leading run-scorer with 465 runs in 13 innings at a strike rate of 130.99, while fast bowler Ashish Nehra finished with 19 wickets in 13 games at a strike rate of 18.21.
Team Made it to playoffs in 2012, 2019 and 2021
Delhi won the IPL 2012 league stage with 11 victories out of 16 matches, qualifying them for the playoffs. However, defeats to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Qualifier 1 and 2, respectively, ended their title hopes. Morne Morkel was awarded the Purple cap for the season after capturing 25 wickets and scoring 495 runs.
Shreyas Iyer took over as full-time captain after the franchise’s name was changed to Delhi Capitals. After a seven-year absence, Delhi returned to the IPL 2019 playoffs. They won nine games in 14 games, matching the top two teams on the table, the Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Super Kings. The Capitals won the Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad, but were defeated by CSK in Qualifier 2 to end their season. Shikhar Dhawan (521 runs) and Kagiso Rabada (25) led the team in runs and wickets that season.
Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of the IPL 2021 due to a shoulder injury, and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant was named captain. Pant remained captain even after Iyer returned to the team for the second leg of the IPL 2021 in the United Arab Emirates.
The change in captaincy had no influence on the Capitals’ results, as they led the league with 10 wins in 14 games. They were defeated in the playoffs by CSK (Qualifier 1) and KKR (Qualifier 2). For the third year in a row, Shikhar Dhawan (5 87 runs in 16 innings) was Delhi’s best run-scorer, while Avesh Khan finished the season as the team’s leading wicket-taker with 24 wickets.
Reached finals in 2020
The Capitals reached their first IPL final under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer. DC finished second in the points standings, with eight wins and six losses. The Mumbai Indians defeated the Capitals in all four games, including the Qualifier 1 and final. For the second consecutive season, Dhawan (618 runs) and Rabada (30 wickets) lead the team in run-scoring and wicket-taking.
