South Africa’s seasoned opening batter, Dean Elgar, has officially declared his retirement from international men’s cricket, concluding an illustrious career spanning 12 years. The forthcoming Test series against India will mark the end of an era for the former skipper, with the emotional finale set to take place at his home ground, SuperSport Park in Centurion, from December 26 to 30, and at Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town, from January 3 to 7.
In a heartfelt statement released by Cricket South Africa (CSA), Elgar expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to represent his country and reflected on the incredible journey he has experienced. Having played 84 Tests and eight ODIs, Elgar’s international career has been highlighted by a remarkable 5146 runs at an average of 37.28, including 13 centuries and a career-best 199 against Bangladesh in 2017.

Elgar, 36, reminisced about his cricketing dreams and acknowledged the invaluable role played by Cricket South Africa in nurturing his talent from a young age. He thanked his teammates, both past and present, coaches, and the unwavering support of fans throughout his cricketing odyssey.
The veteran cricketer assumed the role of Test captain from May 2021 to January 2023, leading South Africa to a commendable third place in the ICC World Test Championship with a notable 2-1 series win over India at home in January 2022.
CSA Director of Cricket, Enoch Nkwe, praised Elgar’s old-school cricketing style, highlighting his resilience and fearlessness against any opposition. CSA CEO Pholetsi Moseki expressed gratitude for Elgar’s contributions, emphasizing his grit and determination as qualities that resonate with all South Africans.
