In a significant announcement, South African Test batsman Dean Elgar has revealed his decision to retire from international cricket after the upcoming Test series against India, according to a statement from Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Friday.
The former captain, who has represented South Africa in 84 Tests and eight ODIs over a 12-year career, will bid adieu to international cricket after the two Test matches against India. The first Test is scheduled to be played at SuperSport Park in Centurion from December 26 to 30, and the second will take place at Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town from January 3 to 7.
Elgar, aged 36, expressed his gratitude and reflected on his remarkable journey in international cricket, stating, “Playing the game of cricket has always been a dream of mine, but having the opportunity to represent your country is the ultimate! Having had the privilege to do it for 12 years internationally is simply beyond my wildest dreams.”

The left-handed batsman has scored over 5000 runs in Test cricket at an average of 37.28, including 13 centuries, with a career-best of 199 against Bangladesh in 2017.
“The Cape Town Test will be my last. My favorite stadium in the world. A place I scored my first Test run against New Zealand and hopefully my last too,” Elgar added.
Elgar served as the Test captain from May 2021 to January 2023, leading the team to a notable 2-1 series win over India at home in January 2022.
CSA CEO Pholetsi Moseki expressed gratitude to Dean Elgar, stating, “We would like to thank Dean for his services over the years. He has represented his country with honor and has been a real ambassador for Cricket South Africa, always playing with his heart on his sleeve.”
The cricketing fraternity acknowledges Elgar’s grit, determination, and significant contributions to South African cricket as the seasoned player prepares to conclude his illustrious international career.
