MI had a great start in the powerplay, hitting boundaries all over the field with Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickleton on the crease. Ryan got dismissed with a short cameo of 24 runs, but Suryakumar Yadav picked up well at the no. 3.

He also scored a half-century along with Rohit. Surya played a knock of 68 runs in 30 deliveries, whereas Rohit Sharma played an unbeaten knock of 76 runs in 45 deliveries.

Chennai Super Kings already had a satisfactory target on the board, and fielders missed some match-winning chances, which resulted in the loss.

Vijay Shankar dropped a catch on the mid-on when Jami Overton bowled a fuller delivery to Rohit Sharma. Later on, Khaleel Ahmed dropped a catch on the deep third man of Rohit again when Pathirana bowled a fuller delivery on the outside off-stump line.

Mumbai Indians’ bowlers produced a very impressive performance, limiting CSK to a humble 176 runs. The turning point for MI was their middle-over plan, where they were able to strangle CSK’s batsmen and gain the upper hand in the match.

While Ashwani Kumar and Trent Boult conceded a combined 85 runs in six overs, the remaining MI attack tightened the screws. Led by Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell Santner, they gave away only 91 runs in 14 overs.

A particularly notable phase of the game was the 27-ball period, where no boundaries were hit, showcasing the effectiveness of MI’s bowlers in drying up the runs. Despite Dube breaking free with a 30-ball fifty, MI’s bowlers, including Bumrah and Santner, managed to contain CSK in the latter half of the innings.

The 19th over, when MS Dhoni was caught out by Bumrah, proved to be decisive, and it allowed MI the opportunity to bowl their death-overs well, preventing CSK from gaining pace.

While Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja offered some-needed impetus, the batting of CSK was mostly intent-less throughout their run. The 30-ball fifty of Dube was the only saving grace, but his sluggish start indicated the overall problem of CSK’s batting depth. The middle overs between overs 8 and 14 witnessed no boundaries being hit, and CSK had to struggle during the middle period.

With MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja facing the bowlers of MI, there were also lost chances for CSK to make the most of good match-ups. Jadeja’s late flurry with a couple of big shots helped him get to his fifty, but by then it was too late to take the game to a high score. This slow accumulation curbed CSK’s ability to get to a higher score.

One of the highlights of the game was by 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre, who opened his IPL career with a furious 32 from 15. His big strike rate at the start in powerplay was the sole thrust given to CSK in the early part of the game, and that helped them put themselves into a respectable position before the collapse in the middle-order.

Mhatre’s performance was also special, as he took on some of MI’s best bowlers, such as Bumrah and Santner, and tackled them confidently. His fall to Deepak Chahar brought an end to CSK’s short spurt of energy during the powerplay, but his contribution proved vital in pushing CSK into a respectable total.

MI’s strategic choices were impeccable throughout the game as they had a singular objective of keeping the middle overs tight and holding CSK’s top-order in check.

Deepak Chahar bowled four continuous overs at the beginning, finally getting rid of Mhatre to deny CSK the initial momentum. Santner contributed significantly towards not letting the pressure loosen by keeping Shaik Rasheed and Jadeja tied up during the middle overs.

Hardik Pandya, MI’s leading wicket-taker in IPL 2025, bowled only two overs for 13 runs. While his limited overs were effective, many felt that he could have bowled more overs in place of Ashwani Kumar or Trent Boult. Nonetheless, MI’s bowling strategy was effective, as they capitalized on the slow conditions and executed their plans efficiently.

lers, particularly Bumrah and Santner, executed their plans to perfection in the middle and death overs, keeping CSK’s score in check.
