CSA Appoints Patrick Moroney As Senior Men’s Convenor Selector

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has confirmed that Patrick Moroney has been appointed as the new convenor selector for the South African men’s national team. Moroney, with more than two decades of cricket selection experience, will take up the role on August 1, 2025. His first project as convenor selector will be the white-ball tour of Australia for South Africa, which will get underway on August 10.

Patrick Moroney is not new to cricket selection. He has been in the industry since 2001 and has served at all levels of CSA, from the South African National Academy to emerging teams and, most recently, as the convenor selector of the Under-19 men.

He was instrumental in the selection of squads for the U19 World Cup, where players like Kwena Maphaka and Lhuan-dre Pretorius were selected as top performers under his leadership.

A Return to the Senior Setup

Although Moroney was in contention to be South Africa’s convenor of selectors in 2019, he was eventually given a spot on the panel under Victor Mpitsang and remained there until early 2023. This new position is his return to the senior men’s setup, but as the top convenor.

In a statement, Enoch Nkwe, CSA’s Director of National Teams and High Performance, said: “Patrick’s extensive knowledge of the game and decades of talent identification make him the best man for the task.”

Endorsement of Head Coach Shukri Conrad

This appointment follows CSA’s overhauling of the selection process. In January 2023, CSA disbanded the selection panel, Hitherto comprising a convenor, a national coach, and a captain, and delegated all selection responsibilities to the coaches: Shukri Conrad (Tests) and Rob Walter (white-ball formats).

But CSA later brought back the convenor selector position to offer strategic assistance. The move came after a thorough review as well as interviews in May 2025, along with Conrad’s elevation to all-format head coach.

Nkwe clarified, “We needed more eyes on the ground. The coach’s attention has to stay with performance, and the presence of a selector like Patrick Moroney assists us in balancing duties effectively.”

Past Selection Highlights and Controversies

In his earlier stint with the panel, Moroney was instrumental in introducing emerging talent Marco Jansen into the limelight, a pivotal player across all formats currently. Yet, controversy was not absent during that time.

Specifically, in the 2022 England tour, the selection panel was accused of making a winning team at Lord’s square and choosing a spinner in conditions favoring seamers at Old Trafford, an action that caused the match and series loss for South Africa.

Moroney’s Vision Complements Proteas’ Future

Having Shukri Conrad indicate his eagerness to collaborate with a “like-minded individual who has South African cricket at heart,” Moroney’s selection is regarded as a key step towards balancing selection strategy with future performance objectives. This partnership of coach and convenor selector Patrick Moroney may prove to be the deciding factor in the Proteas’ success in all formats.

Looking Ahead

All attention will now be on South Africa’s successful tour of Australia, where the first-choice decisions of Patrick Moroney will be under the microscope. With the team looking for consistency and revamp, the convenor selector’s role will be critical to defining the identity of the team and its future performance.
