
Cricket players who retired from international cricket in 2025
By the end of 2024, more than 30 cricketers have retired from international cricket either completely or from a particular format. India’s star players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from T20I, especially after they led the team to victory in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Along with this, Ravichandran Ashwin also retired from international cricket at the end of the year.
On the other hand, big names like David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan announced their retirement from all formats. At the same time, James Anderson, Shakib Al Hasan and Tim Southee also retired from the game. Pakistan’s Mohammad Aamir and Imad Wasim also retired for the second time in 2024. Apart from this, wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha and Matthew Wade also put an end to their careers.

Rishi Dhawan (white ball cricket)
Indian all-rounder Rishi Dhawan became the first player to retire from white ball cricket in 2025. The 34-year-old Dhawan played a few ODIs and T20 matches for India in 2016. In domestic cricket, he played a key role in helping Himachal Pradesh win the Vijay Hazare Trophy. In the IPL, he performed well while playing for Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings and was also part of the winning team of IPL 2013. However, he will continue to play first-class cricket.

Martin Guptill (all formats)
New Zealand veteran batsman Martin Guptill announced his retirement from all formats on 8 January 2025. Guptill played 198 ODIs, 122 T20s and 47 Tests for New Zealand. He has been one of New Zealand’s most successful T20 and ODI batsmen. His score of 237* is still New Zealand’s highest individual score in ODIs, which he made in the 2015 World Cup.

Varun Aaron (all formats)
Jharkhand fast bowler Varun Aaron announced his retirement from all formats on 10 January 2025. Aaron played a few ODIs and Test matches for India, but injuries hampered his career. He also performed well in domestic cricket and was part of the Gujarat Titans team that won the IPL 2022 title.

Tamim Iqbal (all formats)
Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal retired from international cricket on 10 January 2025. Tamim played 70 Tests, 243 ODIs and 78 T20Is for Bangladesh and was one of the most important players in Bangladesh’s cricket history. His total of over 15,000 runs reflects his illustrious cricket journey.

Shapoor Zadran (all formats)
Afghanistan’s left-arm pacer Shapoor Zadran retired from international cricket on 31 January 2025. He is best known for his role in Afghanistan’s first ever win in the 2015 World Cup. He played 44 ODIs and 36 T20Is for Afghanistan and picked up 80 wickets overall.

Wriddhiman Saha (all formats)
India’s wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha retired from cricket after the conclusion of the Ranji Trophy in early 2025. Saha played 40 Tests for India, where he contributed with wicketkeeping as well as batting. He made his mark as one of the best wicketkeepers in the world.

Matthew Wade (all formats)
Australia’s wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Wade announced his retirement from international cricket in early 2025. Wade started his international career in 2011 and his last match was in 2023. He played 102 ODIs and 64 T20 matches. Wade was primarily known as a finisher who played a key role in Australia’s reach to the final in the 2021 T20 World Cup. Wade led the team to the victory in many difficult matches during his career. More than 4000 runs came off his bat.

Imad Wasim (all formats)
Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim announced his retirement from international cricket for the second and final time in 2025. Wasim had previously retired from the T20 format in 2022, but he made a comeback to the team during the T20 World Cup in 2024. This time Wasim has retired from all formats. Wasim played 55 ODIs and 58 T20 matches in his career, in which he scored more than 2000 runs and took more than 100 wickets. His contribution was important in Pakistan’s limited overs cricket.

Tim Southee (all formats)
New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee decided to retire from all formats of cricket in January 2025. Southee made his Test debut for New Zealand in 2008 and announced his retirement after a career spanning almost 15 years. He took more than 350 wickets in 90 Tests and also performed brilliantly in many important matches in ODIs and T20s. Southee’s swing bowling and control under pressure give him a place among New Zealand’s all-time greats.

Shakib Al Hasan (All Formats)
Bangladesh’s legendary all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in 2025. Shakib had been playing for Bangladesh since 2006 and set many records during his career. He played 60 Tests, 225 ODIs and over 100 T20Is, scoring over 12,000 runs and taking over 500 wickets. Shakib is considered one of the finest all-rounders in world cricket and his place in Bangladesh cricket is unique.
