Cricket West Indies Writes to ICC Seeking “Opportunity” At LA28

Cricket West Indies has formally written to ICC asking for an equal opportunity to compete in the LA28. Read this article to know all the details.

Cricket is set for a historic return to the Olympic Games in LA28, ending a 128-year absence from the tournament. The tournament will feature a six-team T20 tournament for both men and women. However, the unique structure of West Indies cricket has put the region’s participation in doubt, sparking a strong appeal for Cricket West Indies (CWI) to the International Cricket Council (ICC) for a fair chance to compete in LA28.

Why Can’t The West Indies Compete In LA28?

The main issue lies in the Olympic Charter, which only recognises sovereign nations for participation. The West Indies compete as a unified team in international cricket, comprising players from countries like Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad, and Tobago. These nations are recognised individually at the Olympics, which means the “West Indies” cricket team, as it exists in the ICC, can not compete as a single entity at the LA28.

If Olympic qualification is determined solely by the world rankings, the Caribbean could be entirely shut out, as individual nations do not stand a chance at competing separately in ICC events and would not have any rankings.

CWI has formally written to the ICC after facing this issue, urging the creation of a qualification pathway that allows Caribbean nations to compete at the LA28. Cricket West Indies chief, Chris Dehring, explained, “All we are asking is that our individual nations’ exceptional Olympic legacy be considered in the conversation. Our nations have proudly flown their individual flags atop Olympic podiums as perennial gold medallists. Now, with cricket’s inclusion, we must ensure that our cricketers are not shut out of history. We are ready to collaborate. We are ready to compete. But above all, we are asking for fairness”

CWI president Kishore Shallow stated, “The Caribbean has always punched above its weight at the Olympics, inspiring the world with our athletic brilliance. Cricket’s return to the Games in 2028 must not exclude our young cricketers from the same dream that has inspired our athletes”

In the letter, Cricket West Indies proposed two solutions, one is an inter-Caribbean qualifying tournament if the West Indies as a team secures a qualifying position. The other is a dedicated regional qualifying process for all independent West Indies nations, allowing the best nation to represent the region at the LA28 Olympics.

What Could Happen?

While the ICC has not yet finalised the qualification process for the LA28, if they decide to go forward with a rankings-based approach without special provisions, the West Indies may be sidelined. However, if the Cricket West Indies’ proposals are accepted, Caribbean nations could have an equal opportunity to qualify for the LA28 Olympics through a regional qualifier.
