County Championship 2023: Surrey creates history against Kent

Surrey created history in the County Championship 2023 as they chased down Kent’s target of 501 runs in the 4th innings. Here is a look at the match.

When Surrey played Kent in the 2023 County Championship, they made history. After Middlesex’s 502 against Nottinghamshire in 1925, their 501 is the second-highest chase in County Championship history. In the fourth inning, Dom Sibley, Ben Foakes, and Jamie Smith all contributed to history with a fantastic batting performances. 

Surrey creates history

Sibley opened the batting for Surrey and finished with 140 runs in 415 balls while remaining unbeaten. He spent close to 10 hours at the crease as a result of his knock. Jamie Smith, who was batting at position four, batted in the ‘Bazball‘ style, scoring 114 runs in just 77 balls while hitting over 148. Young Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh struck out Smith. On his County debut, Arshdeep rocked his stumps. Along with Sibley, Wicket Keeper Foakes shared a 200+ run stand. Before being out, Foakes scored 124 runs off 211 balls. Wes Agar, Hamidullah Qadri, and Joe Denly each got one wicket for Kent, and Arshdeep took two.

First Innings

Despite a rocky start from the top and middle of the order, Kent batted first and scored 301 runs. With only 41 runs scored, they were 5 wickets in the hole as Daniel Bell-Drummond, Joe Denly, and captain Jack Leaning were all out for ducks. They passed the 300-run threshold thanks to a century from wicketkeeper Jordan Cox and half-centuries from Joey Evison and Wes Agar. Sean Abbott, who claimed 4 wickets for Surrey, was the bowler of choice. Daniel Worrall and Dan Moriarty each took one wicket, while Jordan Clark and Gus Atkinson both grabbed two wickets.

Second Innings

While batting, the Surrey side was shut out with only 145 runs, with six batters scoring in the single digits. For Kent, Joey Evinson and Arshdeep Singh each took two wickets, while Matt Quinn and Wes Agar each took three wickets. Arshdeep got his first County wicket when he trapped keeper Foakes for a leg before wicket.

Third Innings

Kent came to bat again after building a comfortable lead of 156 runs. Tawanda Muyeye, who batted first, scored the most runs, 79 in 120 balls. They were able to reach a score of 344 runs thanks to the contributions of Daniel Bell-Drummond (59 runs), Joey Evison (42 runs), and Hamidullah Qadri (72 runs). Jordan Clark claimed five wickets for Surrey, and Daniel Worrall claimed three. Gus Atkinson and Sean Abbott each claimed one wicket.

Sibley made 140 while still being unbeaten, Jamie Smith and Foakes each made centuries, and Tom Latham added a half-century to the total.
