Younis Khan, who stands out for his extensive international cricketing experience, will be a part of Afghanistan’s pre-tournament training camp. Younis and Afghanistan had previously worked together in a 2022 training camp in Abu Dhabi, particularly when he assisted in improving the players’ abilities. Younis adds a wealth of experience to Afghanistan’s team, having participated in 118 Test matches, 265 ODIs, and 25 T20Is during his more than ten years of international cricket.

The Third Consecutive Global Tournament with a Host-Country Mentor

This appointment marks the third consecutive global tournament where the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has appointed a mentor from the host country. Prior to this, in the 2023 ODI World Cup held in India, former Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja was appointed as Afghanistan’s mentor.

Former West Indies cricketer Dwayne Bravo was Afghanistan’s bowling consultant during the 2024 T20 World Cup, which was co-hosted by the West Indies and the United States. This is a recent trend in Afghanistan, where it is seeking to use local experience to support the team during international events.

Afghanistan has qualified for the Champions Trophy as a result of their impressive performances in recent international tournaments. Afghanistan won several significant matches against England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka in the 2023 ODI World Cup, securing the sixth position in the points table.

As a result, they automatically qualified for the 2025 Champions Trophy. They almost managed to win over Australia during the World Cup also, thus strengthening their grip over world cricket even more. In addition, Afghanistan made it to the semi-finals in the 2024 T20 World Cup-its the first time it has gotten so high in a global tournament.

Group B in the Champions Trophy: Afghanistan’s Challenge Journey

In the 2025 Champions Trophy, Afghanistan will play under the bracket of Group B. Afghanistan is to compete against one of the world’s big three teams-Australia, England, and South Africa. The tournament would be played out across different venues, with the majority of the games being played within Pakistan, but all of India’s matches would take place in Dubai. Afghanistan to play in that kind of tournament is a threat, but still, it opens up an avenue for the nation to show on the world platforms how much progress they have undertaken.

You can note that Younis Khan has now been appointed mentor for Afghanistan cricket. This seems to be in line with a strategy by ACB to tap their local cricket icons for their overseas campaigns. Speaking on the strategy, ACB Chief Executive Officer Naseeb Khan said because the Champions Trophy is being staged in Pakistan it was important that an experienced local player was attached to the outfit.

We have made a talented, experienced player for the host nation. In terms of the surroundings, we have appointed Younis Khan as the national team’s coach, and wish him the very best for that big tournament: Naseeb Khan

According to the new appointment, such a step holds great importance for Younis since he has enough knowledge of region-based cricketing settings.

Younis Khan retired from international cricket in 2017, after a brilliant career that had seen him achieve many records and accolades. He has since been involved in coaching, taking up the position of batting coach for Pakistan’s senior men’s team in 2021. However, his tenure was short-lived due to differences with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
