1. Yuvraj Singh
Yuvraj Singh led the Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) for two seasons in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008 and 2009. In 2008, they reached the playoffs and were the runner-up which was a big achievement for a new team. Yuvraj is known for batting and hitting six sixes in an over during the World T20 which inspired his teammates. However, the team faced issues with results, weak bowling, and a lack of experience as a captain. Despite less experience, he remained calm and showed leading behavior on the field.
2. Kumar Sangakkara
Kumar Sangakkara is a famous Sri Lankan cricketer who became the captain of Punjab Kings (formerly Kings XI Punjab) in 2010. Even though the team struggled that season and finished last in the IPL standings the performance of Kumar Sangakkara was outstanding as he scored over 400 runs. He influenced all his teammates. He focused on planning, and analysis and created a positive atmosphere. Sangakkara also mentored young players like Piyush Chawla and Mandeep Singh for laying the groundwork for their success. He captained the team for one season only.
3. Adam Gilchrist
Adam Gilchrist is a famous Australian cricketer who was one of the captains of Punjab Kings from IPL 2011 to 2013. He was a leader who was known for his playing style. His positive energy spread to his teammates which created a motivated team. He was smart and made good use of the team’s talents which included batsmen like Chris Gayle and David Miller, and bowlers like Piyush Chawla and Azhar Mahmood. He has believed in the potential of his team and mentored young players like Yuvraj Singh and Shaun Marsh.
4. David Hussey
David Hussey was one of the captains of Punjab Kings in the 2012 IPL season, he played at the place of Adam Gilchrist. Under his leading era, the team won 4 out of 7 matches. Hussey was an experienced cricketer who made decisions like having Mandeep Singh open the batting. Even though the team did not make it to the playoffs, his captaincy set the stage for future success which shows he had great potential as a leader in T20 cricket.
5. George Bailey
George Bailey was the captain of Punjab Kings, previously Kings XI Punjab. He was known for being calm which helped the team in high-pressure situations. Under his leadership, the team made it to the playoffs in 2014 and 2017. However, these teams are not able to play well. Despite their best efforts, the team was not able to qualify. But his impact went beyond just the results. And he played a key role in developing young talents like Glenn Maxwell and Chris Gayle.
6. Murali Vijay
Murali Vijay became captain of Punjab Kings in the 2016 IPL season which has taken over from David Miller. Even though the team finished eighth, his time as captain had both up and down times. On the positive side, Vijay was a top scorer with 453 runs and provided stability at the top of the batting order. He made some smart moves, like using Axar Patel well as a bowler and moving Glenn Maxwell up the order.
7. Glenn Maxwell
Glenn Maxwell became one of the best captains of the Punjab Kings in 2016. The lively Australian brought energy and unique tactics, promising a new direction for the team. Some moments showed his leadership, like guiding Punjab to a close win against Sunrisers Hyderabad. However, his time as captain was not so well. The team finished last for the second year in a row. Maxwell stayed an important player for the Punjab Kings. Currently, he joined Royal Challengers Banglore.
8. Ravichandran Ashwin
Ravichandran Ashwin was the captain of Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab) from 2018 to 2019. The team tried hard to reach the playoffs under his leadership but missed out in both seasons. However, there were issues with consistent batting, and clashes with the head coach Anil Kumble led to Ashwin leaving. He made his efforts to make the team qualify for finals but this was not possible under his captaincy.
9. KL Rahul
KL Rahul led the Punjab Kings (used to be Kings XI Punjab) from 2020 to 2021. He was the team’s top scorer in both seasons and played well innings. In 2020, he even set a record for the highest score by an Indian batsman in the IPL. In both years, Punjab Kings finished outside the playoff spots and ranked sixth in 2020 and fifth in 2021. Despite his success with the bat, the team could not come together and perform as expected under his leadership. Then in IPL 2022, he joined Lucknow Super Giants and became of the same team from that season.
10. Mayank Agarwal
Mayank Agarwal became the captain of the Punjab Kings in the 2022 IPL season and took over from KL Rahul. Agarwal stayed calm and scored over 400 runs, even hitting a match-winning century. However, the team’s overall performance was not great. Punjab Kings won 6 matches and lost 8 where they finished sixth. In the end, Agarwal’s time as captain was a learning experience. He showed he could lead, but there’s still room for growth. With the team moving on in 2023, his captaincy role ended for Punjab Kings, but his journey as a successful batsman with them might continue
11. Shikhar Dhawan
Shikhar Dhawan is the new captain of Punjab Kings, and he became the captain in IPL 2023. He is a good player and has led Sunrisers Hyderabad to an IPL title in 2016. He has already shown that he has the skills to lead the team, especially when it comes to rotating bowlers and batting in tricky situations. Dhawan does not just impact the game but he also boosts team spirit with his energy. He supports young talents. Finally, he has the leadership qualities that can lead him to his first IPL trophy.
