Cricket Australia’s spokesperson has shared that Cameron Green will be absent for a significant duration of the tour as he is required to adhere to an eight-day concussion protocol. During this period, Green’s condition will be closely monitored by the medical team affiliated with Cricket Australia. His expected return date is slated for September 17th, coinciding with the final ODI scheduled to be held at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, where Australia will face South Africa. This news comes at a time when Australia is grappling with a series of injury concerns as they gear up for their World Cup campaign against India, set to commence on October 8th.

Marnus Labuschagne shines as concussion substitute

It was Marnus Labuschagne who stepped in as a concussion substitute for Cameron Green during the match. Labuschagne’s crucial contribution, together with the efforts of number 9 batsman Ashton Agar, played a pivotal role in securing a victory for Australia. Labuschagne exhibited remarkable resilience at the crease, accumulating an impressive 80 runs off 93 deliveries, thus propelling Australia to a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Notably, Cameron Green did manage to make a significant impact with the ball during the first ODI against South Africa, claiming a crucial wicket in his five-over spell, that of Aiden Markram. Despite conceding 32 runs, his contribution was instrumental in Australia’s performance. With Green now temporarily unavailable, Labuschagne has an opportunity to further bolster his credentials within the ODI squad.

The unfortunate injury to Cameron Green has exacerbated the concerns within the Cricket Australia camp, particularly given the imminent start of the World Cup, which is just a month away. In addition to Green’s predicament, captain Pat Cummins is currently in the process of recuperating from a wrist injury, Glenn Maxwell is nursing an ankle injury, pace bowler Mitchell Starc is on the mend from a groin ailment, and Steve Smith is also in the recovery phase following a wrist injury. All of these players have been selected for Australia’s World Cup squad, which will be heading to India for the prestigious tournament.
